I hadnt really thought we'd have any interest, but I guess there's some feeling Kitna might be injured long term.

Jason Garrett: Orton's a "very good player"

November, 23, 2011
By Todd ArcherIRVING, Texas -- If the Cowboys are going to put in a waiver claim on quarterback Kyle Orton, who was released Tuesday by Denver, coach Jason Garrett isn’t saying.

But Garrett did not shoot down the possibility either.

“Kyle Orton’s certainly been a very good player at a very important position for a while in this league and he’s available,” Garrett said. “It seems like there’s a lot of interest in him from around the league. And like with any player who’s available we have conversations, discussions about him and see where he might fit with our football team.”

The Cowboys could be in the need for a quarterback because of a back ailment suffered by Jon Kitna, although Garrett said he remains hopeful Kitna could be back Dec. 3 against Arizona. According to sources, Kitna had a cortisone injection last week but he has not been seen around the facility.

Stephen McGee will be Tony Romo’s backup for the second straight game. Garrett said the team has a third quarterback plan, but he did not divulge what it would be. In the past, the Cowboys could have used Tashard Choice in the Wildcat. Perhaps they could do the same with Felix Jones. Dez Bryant served as the scout-team quarterback for a few snaps when the Cowboys prepared for Philadelphia’s Michael Vick.

We should definitely sign him.

Let Romo lead the team to the playoffs.... and then start Orton once we get into the playoffs.

If he's so good then why is he available?

We're talking John Elway here. He's still learning Orton isn't that bad of a player. He needs the right quarterback coach to suceed.

Coachspeak... I'd feel better with McGee than Orton. But I wouldn't feel good with either of them... or Kitna for that matter.

and we keep him away from a potential playoff opponent....nahhhhhh our FO doesn't think like that

Well the potentially good thing is that because Garrett spoke on Orton, the Redskins will definitely put in a claim for him to keep him from us, and thus do the job for us.

Baseball move. Keep him away from the Bears who we might be competing with for a Wildcard spot. We've wasted roster spots on less (hello David Buehler).

That kitna injury has been lingering all summer. That is why he didn't play much in the preseason.

Babe talked earlier in the year about how risky it was having kitna as the backup with his back condition.

All that stuf is true.

He also could become a very valuable commodity. We could claim him now and use him as the backup if kitna is out completely.

Then next spring we have a perfect position, he is either a terrific backup next year giving McGee more time to learn and develop or he becomes valuable on draft weekend to someone who didn't get what they wanted at that position and maybe you get a draft pick out of him.

Where did the Chiefs stand in priority?

That's fucking retarded by the way. It's just Haley trying to save his job, bc that team is clearly not making the playoffs even in that shitty division. Orton must be sooo pissed. There was news leaking that he wanted to return to Chicago, which is why he requested to be released in the first place.

Wow. Apparently three teams put a waiver claim in for him, and we were one of the three. We would have got him over Chicago.
