After sleeping on it, maybe the cap nightmare is a blessing in disguise.

I'd be amped if we went balls to the wall in free agency, singing Carr, Nicks, Williams, etc etc etc... but thats just the Madden fan in me.

It's been proven time and time and time and time again you don't build through free agency.

I'd probably be okay with not signing anyone for the first week, provided we were able to sign some decent players once the market settled and drafted well.

I mean, I'm not convinced Brandon Carr is good enough to be a 8-12 million dollar a year cornerback.

Mario Williams wants 45-50 million guaranteed.

Nicks main focus is being the highest paid guard in the league. FU.

Problem is, we never build. Not through FA, not through the draft, not by re-signing our own players. Never. All we normally do is just throw crap against the wall and hope something sticks.

It's a process.

THe giants and patriots have had alot of there success on the backs of free agents...

the problem isnt spending in free agency its spending on the wrong players.

The 07 giants team was loaded with free agents, most of there key players were from somewhere else....

There is nothing wrong with using free agency, the problem is u have to have a plan and use it wisely along with drafting with the same plan.

This team needs serious help at about 5 positions, you cant fix that in the draft, let alone in 1 draft......

We need a corner, a vet ilb, a safety, a punter, possibly a veteran backup tackle, possibly another wr.......nose tackle....

I actually think we need two more corners....

there is no way to fill all this in one season.

We dont have a choice this year.....the key is signing guys that will be productive here in 3 to 4 years when the team is rebuilt and ready to go......we cant have a ryan young/marco rivera/zach thomas type signing....

that is why carr is attractive he is young, one of the centers could fit for a number of years...etc...

we just have to hope they are smart about it.....But at this point we need free agency really bad...

thats not true. This team was built in 05. The 06-09 teams were ready to go, talented good teams....

that window is gone and last year was a last gasp attempt to pull something from the ashes.

They didnt win anything so people like to say nothing was built, but it was and we had one of the better teams in the league but we didnt have any postseason success....

last year was like a throw away year because of the lockout. The team needs to be building now for another run in 2 years. We can do that with smart free agent signgings and a good draft....

I'm all for building your team through the draft too. Last year was the best draft we had in a while.

If we're going to build through the draft and then sign second or third tier free agents, fine, just like VA said in the post above, sign the right fucking players for crying out loud.

Here, I'll give you an example. Did we have the opportunity to sign Brian Waters last year? I believe we did and passed.

What's that tell ya?

Theebs... I'm not advocating not signing anyone.

I'm saying don't blow your load in the begining stages of free agency. Let the market settle. Find quality players without overpaying.

I agree with this. I don't want to overpay for free agents either. Just sign guys who'll fit and can help this team now. Our team is not doing this.

It's all about grasping at straws and hoping the player we sign works out.

You're kind of an idiot. We just need to sign the right guys. Find some more Colombo/Kosiers.

we are hamstrung at corner....we have to get into the mix for the top guys.....Although I like tracy porter, thomas or ross on a 1 year deal....4 vet corners would be great.

What I'm saying is we haven't been signing the right guys in free agency. If we did Brian Waters would be on this team.

How did he work out in New England? Pretty damn good. We just need to do a better job signing the right players for the right price that are a fit for this team.

I would love Williams and Nicks but they are demanding a lot of money. We'll be looking at free agents below them.

You are going to over pay for good players. That’s how free agency works. I hate the mentality of waiting and picking up shit players for cheap, ie Elam, Coleman from last year. You have to find the right players that “fit”. They can come at any point in free agency. I don’t agree with the mentality of “oh, don’t spend money on day one free agents because it cost too much”...Jesus fucking Christ.

But it does cost too much.

And more importantly, it rarely ever works.

See Redskins various years.

See Eagles last year.

How many times does the off season champion experience incredible success during the regular season?

Rarely does it happen.

In all the years of free agency, how many big money contracts were doled out?

Thousands.

How many were major difference makers? 10? 20?

Reggie White. Drew Brees. Deion Sanders.

Uh....

The best teams in the league for the past 10 years or so - Packers, Patriots, Eagles (minus last off season), Steelers, Giants - are never the ones singing big names the first few days of free agency.

There's a reason for it.

Of course, we're in a unique situation because most good teams have quality front offices.

We don't have that.

We have Jerry.

So it's even harder for us to build through the draft.

Basically we're fucked no matter what our offseason strategy is.
