NFL beat writer Rick Gosselin answered your questions in a chat Thursday. Here are some highlights.

Alex-Ocala asks ... Who do you think will end up being the teams DC? It seems like Garrett wants an aggressive 3-4 and frankly, we need that. Thoughts?

RICK GOSSELIN: I think it was widely accepted in Dallas that Jones made a good choice in Garrett. But I'm not sure that it was universally regarded across the NFL as a great hire. Garrett was half to blame for that 6-10 mess of a season. He ran the offense, which turned the ballover 30 times. But no one knows how Garrett will be as a head coach. No one knew about John Harbaugh, a relative unknown hired by the Ravens. He turned into a gem -- taking Baltimore to the playoffs each of his first three seasons. No one knew about Josh McDaniels. He didn't last two season with the Broncos. I've long thought Garrett had a chance to become a great coach. But he's still at the front end of the learning curve. Time will tell.

I guess whoever did this mixed up the question and answer, since the response has nothing to do with the question asked.

He's awful.

Eh, he makes a solid point. Its still questionable how successful Garrett can be as a HC. There are definately still some question marks. For all the talk about discipline, focus, and attention to detail about him.. i still saw alot of sloppy mistakes, poor execution, and stupid penalties and miscues after he took over.

Also, im not sure why, but if it were me, i definately would have at the very least interviewed Harbaugh. Seems like he's alot like Garrett and knows how to get things done and is very strong willed and a motivator and a great leader. Wouldn't have hurt to interview one or two more guys just to make sure we were making the right move. Not like Garrett was going anywhere.

I don't think Garrett is half to blame for the first half of the season.

Again, you play like you practice. The head coach set the tone all offseason. He didn't have his team prepared to play. The offensive coordinator can only play the hand he was given, which was a soft content team that thought they could just show up and win.

Why do you think he immediately put pads on these guys in practice when he took over? Why did he announce at his press conference when he was hired that we will have a physically demanding camp? He knows the preparation was flawed. And it negatively effected the entire team.

You won't see it happen again.

I don't think he was to blame for the first half of the season. However, the same little stupid mistakes that we were making to cost us wins in close games under Wade, continued to happen even after Garrett took over.

That is a concern for me, but overall i think he showed enough to warrent his chance. Just wish we had interviewed Harbaugh as well. Seems like a guy who knows where he's going and how he's going to get there.

They seem pretty similar to me. The only difference is one got to be a HC in college first, and the other is a NFL lifer.

The way they approach the game, their thought process and how they see "winning" football seems pretty similar.

That said, I hope Harbaugh craps his pants in SF. Hate that team and everything about them.

Garrett took over on the fly. No time to prepare them the right way. He had to take a very flawed product and make the most of it.

There is no way we start the season 1-7 if Garrett set the tone in the offseason. That blame falls entirely on Wade Phillips.

They both have coached in the NFL.

I mean the guy who spent his career coaching in the NFL and getting the head coaching gig because of it.

Nobody's hiring Harbaugh off of his cup of coffee coaching quarterbacks in Oakland 8 years ago.

Eh, to be honest Garrett's time as an OC really wasn't that impressive to me. I do believe though that certain guys just make better coaches than coordinators, and i think Garrett is definately one of those guys.

I thought Garrett did remarkably well with an offensive line with no talent. And no real head coach at the top.

We've never had a great OL, but they've never really been this terrible until this season.

Since he got here, we went down in points scored every season up until this one. Just didn't really do it for me, especially with the talent we have on offense here.

Like it has been mentioned before, we need a tough TC.

That alone with some other players in the mix will make us a better team.

And of course Rob Ryan putting his stamp on the defense.

They just put the juiciest tidbit in the headline to get dumb kids like you to read it. Seems they succeeded. Because you are dumb.

There's going to be question marks for any that would have ended up as the HC. And since Harbauigh is much like Garrett according to you, wouldn't there still be a bunch of question marks, so what would have been the purpose of interviewing him?
