— The move to trade back into the seventh round to draft Swaim was a logical one. Without DeMarco Murray, the Cowboys are going to need better blocking from the tight end position in the run game. Too much was asked of Jason Witten last season to be both the primary blocker and receiver at the position. He's 33 this season and the Cowboys need to be smarter in how they deploy him. James Hanna and Gavin Escobar are primarily receivers. Thus, there's a role in the offense for the 250-pound Swaim that's his for the taking.

It was a bit amusing to find out San Francisco also chose a TE later in the 7th round with one of their compensatory picks, after making the trade with us.

Blocking TEs aren't a prime commodity worth wasting resources on.

They could have just kept Scott Chandler, who they pulled off the street, and been better off. Instead we've wasted how many draft picks on TEs that don't contribute?

This guy's got good hands. Videos posted in another thread. He looks just like Witten out there.

Guess we just have to hope John Garrett was behind all those terrible evaluations.

Escobar is going to blow up this year. This is the year Witten starts breaking down badly.

He had like three catches in that video and you're comparing him to Witten?
I am saying he looks like him. He moves like him, has alot of the same blocking tech he has, and clearly has good hands.

They don't throw to the TE much at UT. From the looks of this guy they probably should have.

Made that assessment after watching a minute long "highlight" vid
There were two videos posted, one of them was alot longer than that.

But, at least we see the limit of your own investigation.

I watch UT football at least. This is how I know they don't throw to the TE much. Dallas however, likes to do so.

I am not saying he IS Witten or even a Witten clone. I am saying I can see why Dallas wanted to secure his rights rather than risk him getting drafted elsewhere, or trying to sign him UDFA.

Maybe if he were any good they'd have thrown it to him more?

Those are usually nice, safe, easy passes for QBs who suck.

The only comparison to Witten that I saw was him catching the ball at one point for a 1st (just beyond the sticks) and getting immediately dragged down.

But dammit if we aren't loading up on quality blockers. The FO really stuck to their plan of not chasing after any one particular guy at RB. Just surround whoever they have left with great blocking.
