George Selvie is No. 98 in your program, not to be confused with Tyrone Crawford, who also is No. 98 but is out for the season. The Cowboys signed the defensive end off the street on July 24 as a camp body after losing Crawford and starter Anthony Spencer (knee).

The former South Florida standout turned heads Sunday with four tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits. He did his best impersonation of Crawford, who had been expected to spell starters DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer before tearing his Achilles.

"He has done a nice job," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said of Selvie. "He did a nice job from the first practice he has been with us . You can tell he has played a lot in this league. He is a good football player. He is a hungry football player. He works hard in practice. You saw him show up again in the game tonight. It didn't surprise us that he would do that based on how he's been practicing."

Selvie, a seventh-round pick of the Rams in 2010, has played 36 games for three teams in four seasons. The Bucs signed Selvie, 26, in April but released him in May. He was working out and hoping for a call.

"You try not to think about it, but in the back of your mind, you’re like, ‘Man, people are in OTAs; people are about to start camp,'" Selvie said. "I’m sitting at home still working out, playing with my son. But I finally got that call and when I got that call, I was ready. That’s all about being prepared."

Selvie was in his hometown of Pensacola, Fla., only three weeks ago, at a banquet with Emmitt Smith. Smith saw Selvie on the field before Sunday's game and said, with surprise, "They signed you?"

Now, everybody knows the Cowboys signed him. Owner Jerry Jones even singled him out.

"Through the last three years, I’ve been through some stuff," Selvie said. "So just going out here and having a good game, starting off right. We’ve got four more games left, still got training camp left. I’ve got to build off that. I can’t stay settled. I’ve got to go for greatness, and that’s what I’m going to try to do."

Okay... one game wonder, or do you think this guy can build on this momentum?

Well, naturally we will see. Admittedly, it's a great start. But it would be a testament to Kiffin and especially Marinelli, if they can turn players like this into solid contributors.

I was hoping there would be another Alonzo Spellman out there.

Looks like there was...

He looked great out there...or is the Dolphins line that bad? Everything i have read, their line is train wreck. Not a bad start nonetheless.

I didn't see his 2nd sack, but that was great situational awareness peeling off the blocker and pursuing the QB on the bootleg. A QB worth his shat would've gotten rid of the ball, but Selvie still would've rushed the throw there.

Did anyone else get a sack?

I thought I saw Wilbur with a sack. I know he had at least 2 hurries. He looked good too.

It's a relief that Selvie has stepped in for Crawford, or so it appears.

I'm really looking forward to the next game. This team is so much better without Rob Ryan and without Garrett calling plays.

He looked like a true 4-3 DE last night. Appropriate size and quick too.

It isn't unreasonable to hope he'll be an o.k. sub when a starter needs a break.

Time will tell.

God I hate Jerry. Look how satisfied he looks there. "See, this is why we didn't draft any defensive lineman. We had a plan! ~wink"

Only good thing is, he just looks older and older with each picture I see of him.

Selvie flashed some of the potential he showed at South Florida and played like a guy who knows he's running out of chances.

Very solid pickup, which seems rare for us this offseason.

Despite his great sophomore year he kind of regressed a little as a Junior and then almost disappeared as Senior when JPP blew up. He was a 7th round pick and the Rams have a lot of young talent on the D Line. Maybe it was just a numbers game. The Panthers claimed right away but cut him a month later to sign one of Rivera's ex-players. They also have some good young ends. Jacksonville signed him a month later and kept him for the rest of 2011. Not sure what happened there but Jacksonville has been running through defensive linemen lately(and we keep signing them). Tampa Bay signed him this last April and then cut him 2 months later after drafting 2 Defensive Linemen. Tampa Bay is another team with a lot of youth and talent on the D Line so again, maybe it was a numbers game.

I know it seems weird and maybe he's a jerk in the lockeroom? I can't find a single negative story on him though. He's 26 so he's still young enough to turn things around. This team's refusal to add young talent on the defensive line and Crawford's injury may have been the perfect storm for Selvie.
