MOBILE, Ala. — The Dallas Cowboys are open to bringing back defensive end Anthony Spencer, who is set to be an unrestricted free agent, club executive vice president Stephen Jones said Wednesday from Senior Bowl practices.
The Cowboys used their franchise tag on Spencer for a second consecutive season last year but he played in only one game before he had to undergo season-ending microfracture surgery on his left knee Oct. 1.
Spencer made $8.8 million under the franchise tag in 2012 and $10.6 million under the franchise tag in 2013. In 2012, he earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl after finishing with a career-high 11 sacks.
The Cowboys won’t use their franchise tag on Spencer — or any other player this off-season, for that matter — Jones said. But they’d be interested in Spencer returning to help their defensive line that could lose three of its four projected starters going into 2013.
“Anthony has been an unbelievable player for us, and it’s very unfortunate what happened to him last year,” Jones said. “But very productive, obviously a guy we think a lot of. We franchised him last year and of course injuries happen in our league, but he’s the type of player you want on your team. We’ve got our fingers crossed, and I know he does, too, that his injury comes along in the proper way.”
