Garrett says Cowboys feel good about 'under contract' Callahan and Kiffin, but doesn't promise same roles

The Cowboys are keeping embattled coordinators Bill Callahan and Monte Kiffin, but head coach Jason Garrett didn’t promise they would return in the same roles.

“We’ll keep looking at how we can be better as a staff and what roles everybody’s in and what we’re asking them to do,” Garrett said Tuesday at the Senior Bowl, asked if he had to be convinced by owner Jerry Jones to keep the veteran assistants for another year. “But those guys are really good football coaches.”

Speaking a day earlier, Jones said he did not feel as inclined this year to make major staff changes as he did last year, when he brought in Kiffin to change the defensive scheme to a 4-3 and also declared that Callahan would take over play-calling from Garrett.

Garrett sidestepped the idea that Kiffin and Callahan wouldn’t have returned.

“Those guys are under contract. We feel good about that,” he said. “We’re always going to try to do things that are in the best interest of our football team. … We’ll keep looking at what everyone’s roles are and however it settles down.”

Dallas coordinators back, but changes likely

By Calvin Watkins | ESPNDallas.com

"Those guys are under contract and we’re always trying to figure out ways to do things better, and that starts with us as a coaching staff and we’ll keep looking into what everyone's roles are and how everything settles down," Garrett said from Day 2 of the Senior Bowl practices. "We do have some coaches who are out of contract and we’re trying to get those things settled and were in the process of those conversations right now."

Garrett said he would like to fill the vacant tight ends position and he's looking at Mike Pope, the former tight ends coach for the New York Giants, who was let go last week. Garrett called Pope a friend and hopes to get a hire for that position soon.

Yet, with the coordinators returning, at least right now, roles could change.

Last year, quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson moved from the sidelines to the press box to help Callahan read defenses. There wasn't much change within the defensive staff.

"We feel good about that," Garrett said of Kiffin and Callahan's return. "We're always going to try and do things in the best interest of our football team. We’ll keep looking at how we can be better as a staff and what roles everybody's in and what we’re asking them to do. But those guys are really good football coaches."

Yes, this year, Kiffin will coach from a Laz E Boy recliner hooked up to an IV of Red Bull. Bill Callahan will call plays in pig latin to confuse would be spies. Changes!

Translating Garrett: Callahan is staying but I'm still trying to convince Jerry to let me call the plays.

IDEC. These dudes have decent track records anyways. Kiffin is probably mostly dead now so I'd go after like schiano but the players are always mediocre so it is what it is

Zimmer has had some defenses that sucked too, including the year after he left us. I also don't care what anyone says, his defenses here were mediocre at best.

Wade has been a good DC everywhere he has been, not sure what your point is. He sux as a HC, that's why he was fired.

Rob Ryan has been a coordinator for like a dozen yrs or so, he's been on one playoff team and for the most part has had defenses ranked in the bottom half of the league.

But keep the spin going.
