Ellis: Garrett Noncommittal On Bernadeau's Role

Posted by jellis at 5/20/2012 10:27 PM CDT on dallascowboys.com

In March, the Cowboys handed what was considered starter money to guard Mackenzy Bernadeau, a four-year, $11 million deal. Only a week removed from hip surgery, though, there is some question about the former Panther's role this season.

The timetable for Bernadeau's return is 10-12 weeks. If the full three months passes before he is cleared to practice, Bernadeau is in danger of missing most of training camp and possibly two preseason games.

In the meantime, young players will try to make their case to fill the starting job that was expected to be Bernadeau's. Head coach Jason Garrett won't say whether Bernadeau will take over the top spot upon his return.

"Not ready to really make a comment on that," Garrett said Sunday. "The biggest thing he has to do is really get himself healthy. He's gone through that process. He told me he started the rehab up in Colorado three hours after he got out of the surgery. It's an aggressive rehab and he's trying to get himself back and is doing a good job so far, and our training staff does such a good job getting these guys back.

"That's where his focus has to be, and we're going to focus on the guys who are able to practice right now, get them ready, keep the injured guys into it, and hopefully when they come back they will compete for a spot."

There was some thought that Bernadeau could play center for the Cowboys, but that ship may have sailed with his injury.

"We'd be less inclined to play him at a couple different spots initially, because he's losing his offseason work," Garrett said. "Essentially we're going to have 12 to 13 practices this offseason, so it's a really important part. It allows us to introduce our programs and our schemes to our players."

Bernadeau could miss about that many training camp practices as well.

"We're disappointed that he got banged up," Garrett said. "He's not going to be a part of this thing, but like all our injured players, he has to stay close to it, be engaged in the meetings, be engaged on the practice field and get as much of the information as he can so when he comes back for the start of training camp, he's ready to roll."

You really can't read too much into this. In fact, I'd actually be suprised (and disappointed) if Garrett ignored the fact that a new, relative unknown commodity would have a defined role despite the fact he's going to miss so much time.

OTA starts Tuesday so it will be interesting to see what the line is.

Last night on the blitz they had Nagy penciled in as the starting right guard.

It's scary to think costa and Nagy will be starters again.

I used to be hopeful of Costa, but I've jumped ship. I didn't think strength would be an issue for him, but clearly it is. Moreso lower body than upper. He can't anchor worth a shit.

Nagy... meh. He comes from OL U, so we'll see.

Amazing how the offensive line is just not that big of a concern to ownership.

If I'm Romo. I might be inclined to be a little ticked off

Absolutely.

The attitude seems to be "maybe we can get by with this."

I can understand not wanting to break the bank on the most expensive, highest quality interior OL available, but trying to squeak by with several below average spare parts seems foolish, if not irresponsible.

Sometimes you have to rely on your own draft choices to pan out. Is not as if we haven't been drafting interior linemen lately. Let's see if the young guys develop.

How much confidence do you have in our young guys, considering our track record. And which ones do you have the highest expectations for.

Welcome to the forum, btw.

i don't know yet, but we were too quick to dump a guy like Stephen Peterman in the past, and us fans (including mua) were too critical of him at the time and he developed quite nice for Detroit. We got Kowalski, Arkin, Nagy and the rookie Leary in the fold. Let's see if one of them at least pans out, that's all I'm saying. Oh and thanks for the welcome.

I'm pulling for Arkin. Then Nagy.

I'd like one of our draft picks to pan out, if for no other reason than to give me confidence in our ability to scout, draft, and develop lineman.

WELCOME

I agree with that also and we didnt see that much of nagy before he was hurt. So maybe a full offseason and him playing one position all summer will really help him.

at the same time no matter what until we see it, it kind of feels like they are playing a dangerous game of chicken with the interior of the line.

it would be just our luck the defense comes out and looks great and the line causes us to be just an average offense and we start losing games 17-14 or something.

All I know is, the line has to play better if this team expects to seriously compete for a championship with the current cast of all-timers(Romo, Witten and Ware).

Id like to see more urgency out of the front office when it comes to the O-line. Not just drafting late round projects, but actually going aggressively after free agents or possibly trading for a G or C.

I know you can't fix the whole line in one or two years, but we're nearing the end here. Especially if Romo doesn't get better protection and a nice compliment out of the running game soon. DeMarco looked really capable last year, hopefully the line isn't as bad at run blocking as Barber and Felix made them look the last 3-5 years.

We'll see.

Silverbear? :awkward

besides the whole "our pass blocking consists of romo drawing up plays in the dirt" we also cant run block for shit. Weak in the redone and can't push the pile for a clock-killing 3rd and 3.

Yeah, I know, Lawrence Vickers :jackoff

Silverbear created an account here. Realized there was no protection for arrogant shits that like to suck up to mods. Hasn't been back since.

Weird.
