FOX Sports: Bennett hints Romo was playing favorites
Bennett hints Romo was playing favorites
Keith Whitmire

Now that he's no longer second fiddle to Jason Witten, former Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett apparently thinks Tony Romo is playing out of tune.

Bennett, who signed with the New York Giants this offseason, had nothing but praise for his new quarterback, Eli Manning, in a recent interview on the Newark Star-Ledger's website, nj.com. But in doing so, he took an indirect shot at Romo and his habit of connecting with Witten.

Asked his thoughts on Manning, Bennett said: "Oh man, I don't think there's a better quarterback than him in the NFL right now. Watching his approach to the game and the way he coaches everybody up and gets everybody involved, I think he's an unselfish quarterback, which is what you want."

Asked to elaborate on what he means by unselfish, and Bennett is clearly talking about how Manning differs from Romo.

"I mean, he's just looking for the open guy," Bennett said. "It doesn't matter who it is or what number you are. If you're open, he's going to hit you."

Witten, a seven-time Pro Bowl tight end, has caught at least 79 passes a year since 2007, the first year Romo began the season as the starter.

Then again, Bennett later agreed that it's rare for a quarterback not to have a favorite target.

"Every quarterback has one or two guys they go to on most teams," Bennett said. "But here, it's not really like that."

And to be fair, Bennett placed some blame for his lack of production in Dallas on himself. In four seasons with the Cowboys, Bennett caught just 85 passes. He was prone to a number of drops.

Bennett hasn't caught a TD pass since catching four in 2008, his rookie season.

"Consistency is my thing right now that I'm working on," Bennett said. "I've made plays here or there in the past, but doing it consistently is what I want to do. In this offense, I think I have a chance to be a consistent playmaker."

Bennett clearly sees this as an opportunity to shine after playing in Witten's shadow. He's already shining as a quote machine for the New York media.

I agree. And I think Romo's favorites are guys who work hard, can be relied upon, and fight to get open.

None of which is what Bennett ever did.

Typical, blaming somebody else instead of taking responsability for your results. Of course Romo is not going to go your way if consistency is an issue with you. And if it remains an issue, Manning will certanily look elsewhere as well.

I wouldn't be suprised if the he didn't make the Giants final 53.

He doesn't seem like the kind of player they'd keep. While that team has had it's share of malcontents and loudmouths.. they've all been hard workers.

Bennett has no work ethic. Those red flags we saw in Hard Knocks 2008 weren't a mirage.

When did he ever care about contributing to the team? That's right, never.

Didn't he also suggest that Kitna be given a chance to win the starting job last year? Good riddance, dick.

the last of the owens morons. They are all officially gone now. thank god.

its pretty funny how he says he plays favorites basically like roy williams did.

but laurent robinson was here for five minutes and romo realized he was running his routes correctly and in rhythm and most importantly he could catch, so he kept throwing him the ball.

marty b couldnt do any of that.

that third and forever would be first down catch which became a drop against the vikings in a key moment still pisses me off.

never could stand this guy and I am so glad he is gone.

all the he is a great blocker people can go off themselves.

Love how he walks off the field with a smirk on his face after that play.

Take it for what its worth, which is not much but I heard directly through Jason Garretts college roomate who works for Deutche Bank in nyc that Garret went absolutely nuts on Romo after that play. The orginal call was having Austin run a slant through the middle which supposedly would have been wide open. Romo audibled the play into which it was.

I responded. They audible 50 times a game without issue and he responded that play was designed for that exact set up it was.

So glad this underwhelming mental midget is out the door. Disappointing this team didn't get anything for him in return a few years ago when they had the chance.

The way the last few years have gone with this team I wouldn't be shocked if the new bloated version of Bennett doesn't score his first TD since 08' against us opening night.
