I digress. As a newb, I would hate for my first impression to be made in a thread discussing race/racism. Would not want to potentially offend someone, when that it not at all my intention.

How is the rule racist? The rule and affirmative action do not imply racial superiority. It is there to prevent systemic racism that exists in the NFL and our culture.

It's reverse racism. And it was put in place because of guilt of a racist.

It doesn't force anyone to hire anyone, but, it could ruin the chance of one team getting a guy they really want because they haven't interviewed a minority yet. I don't see people as a race. Sorry , everyone is equal in my book. Which is why dumbass rules like these shouldn't exist. If someone is good enough for the job, they will get it.

Well that's like saying there is no racism. Or was no racism.

You can't tell me all a black man had to worry about is being good enough for the job to get it. Many have been denied jobs that they were qualified for simply because of their race. I don't think it's a common thing now, but certainly in the past.

My problem with this rule is it's pointless. I don't understand the mindset behind it. If you feel the NFL owners are racist, which you have to believe in order to think this needs to be addressed, then how does making them interview a minority change anything? What, are they really smooth talkers? Are they gonna change the man with one slick sales pitch?

If Jerry Jones is racist and doesn't want a black man coaching his team (he's not, just an example), then all the forced minority interviews will result in the same amount of hires. None.

Supporters will say it gets their name out there. Out there to who? To the people who aren't racist and would interview them without the rule? This rule was put in place to address racism. Those people don't count. What specifically does the rule do to counter a racist owner? Not a damn thing.

To me it's a cosmetic thing the league does. Makes them look good to the public. I don't believe it's gotten one minority candidate hired. On the other hand, it's insulted a lot of coaches with token interviews. It may even cost a team a coach on their staff with any delay to adhere to the rule.

Systemic racism? Are you suggesting that the NFL owners who employ players of all nationalities regardless of race or ethnic background are racist?

Are you of the belief that these same owners who pay these players considerably more than their respective head coaches, and often times make these players the face of the franchise, would refuse employment to a qualified candidate based on the color of their skin?

Just because minorities are employed does not mean racism does not exist. You've heard of the glass ceiling? For a long time minorities were allowed to advance to a certain point because no one ever thought they could go further. Why do you think most centers, QBs and MLBs have been white? I'm not saying the owners are racist, just that racism is present in the system. An owner probably would not refuse to hire a qualified candidate based on color, but the minority candidate who is qualified would have to work twice as hard to get half the exposure.

The Rooney Rule does not cure blatant racism, because a racist owner will not hire a minority if he does not have to. It is designed to help cure systemic racism by helping minorities break through the glass ceiling.

Cythim has convinced me.

And I'll take it a step further. I think the NFL should institute a rule that forces teams to interview a woman for their head coach position.
