Firing Jason Garrett would cost Jerry Jones up to $24 million

Posted by Mike Florio on December 27, 2015, 4:34 PM EST

With the Cowboys sliding to 4-11 and owner Jerry Jones not too long ago calling out the coaching staff for not winning enough games with quarterback Tony Romo out, some are now wondering whether Jones will fire Jason Garrett. Jones can do whatever he wants, but it wouldn’t be cheap to move on from Garrett.

As a free agent a year ago (technically), Garrett landed a five-year, $30 million contract to remain on the job. With four years left, the buyout for firing Garrett would be up to $24 million.

Jones and the Cowboys would get credit for any money Garrett earns elsewhere in coaching (and possibly in broadcasting). Alternatively, Garrett could make $6 million a year for four years to do not a damn thing.

The other reality for the Cowboys is that Jones and Garrett work well together, in that Jones wants to claim credit and otherwise pop off and Garrett doesn’t care about any of that. A new coach may not be as compliant as Garrett, making it harder for Jones to portray himself as the primary chef instead of sidecar passenger to a Jimmy Johnson or a Bill Parcells.

Id he does fire him rather than promoting him to the front office, there is zero chance he lands another job coaching in the NFL. Maybe some Div II or Div III college coaching job but no NFL teams would seriously consider him.

But he's not saving money. It'd cost even more to keep him in the long run. And it's still money wasted. And somebody wants to sit up here and claim that Jones is a great businessman?

Wasn't he just recently awarded "GM of the year" or something? LOL

HELL NO! Him getting another HC coaching gig is out of the question. People are going to take a very hard look at the 7-game losing streak. Teams are going to be like, "You couldn't win with Romo, Bryant, and Witten... three consecutive 8-8 seasons. Not too many teams have that kind of fire power, and not that many people are that incompetent enough to squander it."

Him being an OC is also out of the question. What kind of HC wants to be looking over their shoulder, thinking that this POS would try to sandbag him. Quiet as it's kept, I think a lot of HCs and coaches in general think that Wade got a raw deal, and see Garrett as a backstabber.

Yeah. One of those dubious awards. Not sure how he got it. You have Romo, Witten, Dez, and Murray... you're fucking supposed to win more than 8-games.

Which is what it will cost to keep him and watch him fuck up for another 4 years.

Exactly. Think in the last 4 years of his deal you sign just one free agent a year to an overall contract of 35 mil. It would be just like throwing it away with Garrett still HC.

All told, Garrett will walk away with $52 million for his time with the Cowboys. Remember he earned $3 million/yr. as an OC --- the highest-paid OC in the league and thus history at that time --- without EVER calling a single play --- and getting paid the exact same amount as Wade, who was the HC. So for those 4 yrs (3 1/2 as OC, and 1/2 as interim HC), he makes $12 million.

Wade gets canned, Garrett takes over. That following offseason, his contract is up, and he is made the HC --- no longer interim, and I believe he makes $4 million/yr. Three consecutive 8-8 seasons, and one winning season later, he has made $16 million. He re-signs a new contract worth $24 million ($6 million/yr.) --- because he finally had ONE FUCKING WINNING SEASON (after being neutered --- I guess this is Jerry's way of making it up to him).

So $12 million + $16 million + $24 million - $52 million. WOW! WHAT. A. COLOSSAL. WASTE. OF. MONEY.

When you put it in that perspective... you could almost be knocked over by a feather.

And people hail this jerk as a great businessman. He throws out large contracts like candy at the first sign of something positive. Letting Murray go was a sure sign the fool learned his lesson, or so the tale went. Too bad coaches don't count against the cap, he may have been smarter with this losers salary. Like Garret had such a bargaining chip to demand that type of money. :/

I wonder if Jerry even realizes this. It's not even advanced accounting.

If you bring in a guy like Payton or even Gruden, you'll make more than $24 mil in apparel and ticket sales just in the first week of the regular season. If those guys get us in the playoffs a couple times for deep runs, then he'll make $24 mil an hour during those games.

It's so stupid to waste away the final years of your core team just to save an amount that would equate to a drop in the bucket with a good coach.

But then has the fucking nerve to balk at Sean Payton's demands of $8 million/yr. I'm sorry, but while $8 million is quite steep, I am sure many would find paying Payton $8 million, makes a lot more sense than paying Garrett $6 million. BTW... Garrett is #9 (Romo's number --- coincidence?) on the list as among highest paid NFL coaches.

LOL

A .500 record (with a perennial pro bowl QB) and a very questionable last minute wildcard playoff win makes you that valuable? What a baller.

Gotta hand it to him for robbing from the paying fanbase while arrogantly censoring anyone who questions his skillz. He's like an orange Kim Jong Un. Just a comical figure that won't go away.

Then he follows that up with getting swept by an entire division (NFC South). First to occur for this team since re-alignment back in 2002.
