exactly. those guys were getting 30-40 touches as PRIMARY OPTIONS.

Well, two things... In Wittens case, we had no quarterback.

In Dez's case, he was not a PRIMARY OPTION (all caps because?). Witten and Miles were. Not to mention we were a bad team that year. Kitna and even McGee started games. And for whatever reason, Dez wasn't even targeted that often until Kitna started games. Unless my memory is off. I think it was kind of a story how Dez got more involved when Kitna was playing.

If Esco gets that as like our 5th option you HAVE to be pleased. He's doing good work if that's the case.

No... because why did we use our second round draft pick in a year when we have glaring holes and no cap room leaving us only one way to address those needs (the draft) on our 5th option in our offense.

But I should clarify my previous statement.... you tell me Pablo ends the year with 33 catches, and I'm disappointed. You tell me Pablo ends the year with 33 catches, 6+ tds, a higher than average YPC, and some critical third down conversions or otherwise noteworthy plays in a year where our offense is pretty effective, I'll view the pick in a different light.

And I'm not hating on Pablo or the fact we took him. I see positives to the move, but I totally think it was a luxury selection and I'm not sure we could afford it. Time will tell.

Oh, and I'm a little salty he's cockblocking James Hanna - a player I was/am pretty high on.

I'm sure if Escobar doesn't meet your lofty expectations we can come up with a bunch of flimsy reasons why he didn't just like you've done for the examples I threw out there.

Bottom line it's tough for a receiver to jump right in and contribute to the passing game. If you average 2 catches a game as a rookie (even as a first rounder) you're having a pretty good year by anyones realistic expectations.

I'm being perfectly reasonable. Again, I don't hate the player. It was just a luxury pick. By your own words, the 5th option in our offense.

I understand your "we reached for a luxury" point

but you can't hold that against him and say "we didn't need you so you need to do more than comparable draft picks to make up for our front office's insistence on having a 2 TE offense."

If he produces in line with a normal to above average 2nd round receiver (in that 30 receptions range) it's a successful pick IMO and a good first year for our possible TE of the future.

I'm bitching about the selection of the player. Not the player himself.

Theres a difference.

I think it's pretty clear we drafted Escobar to be Witten's replacement. The success of this pick won't be determined until about 5 years down the road.

Then that's even worse.

Might as well draft Dez's replacement next year.

The team drafted him because this team does nothing but copy other teams.

Wildcat. Seattle and Chicago were dominant on defense......well, time to go Kiffin. New England kills it with 2 TEs.......gotta keep going for that. Albeit, Dallas has been failing at the 2TE set longer than since 2010, I have zero doubt that they would have just abandoned it if nobody else was making it work. But, New England gets all this production so that's where they're going to stay.

It was a ridiculous pick followed up by another ridiculous pick at WR. The odds of both of them being on the field at the same time are slim.

I really don't care if they are drafting for replacements. It's not like this is the only draft that will take place in the next 3 or 4 years. They'll be plenty of players to pick over the next couple years, worry about replacing a HOF TE or Miles Austin at this point is entirely premature given that the OL and S positions are complete shit.

Eh. There's something to be said for drafting the BPA's.

In Escobar's situation, Witten isn't going to be elite much longer. He already is much more limited downfield than he has ever been, and that's makes the offense easier to defend.

In Williams situation the guy in front of him (Austin) is massively injury prone and has large cap charges. They already considered releasing him THIS year. Williams also adds a downfield dimension to the offense that it lacks today.

That was what I hated about the pick the most. I posted this after we selected Escobar:

I like Hanna, so this wasn't a need as far as I'm concerned. Still... TE's are a match up nightmare, so...

I just hope we don't draft a WR now. This should satisfy that need.

We followed the tight end selection up with a WR, project safety, cornerback, then runningback.

You don't build a football team from the outside in.

we been doing the two TE thing forever. It took NE forever to get ir right, too - before they got Gronk and Hernandez they spent a bunch of high picks on TEs and quite a few on wideouts, none of which worked out.
