The parallel here is blatant - two quarterbacks who by popular belief single handedly carried their teams for years, but to only limited success and mostly failure at worst and mediocrity at best - Elway didn't get his Lombardi trophies or his rings until he got a coach who insisted on running the ball not just relying on the pass. I mean, Elway was God and all, but just not quite powerful enough to do it all on his own.
And wasn't it just a feel good story? The long suffering multimillionaire Elway who somehow, although of course never, ever his own fault - always managed to come up short. Just couldn't quite get the fucking job done. Because he didn't have any help. Good ole John, most of his career wasted away by bad coaching, finally got his rings to go with his millions! But it was sort of tainted. Their bruising running game ruled the day. Poor John was just a sympathetic figurehead of the mighty Denver offense.
Fast forward to now - are we seeing history repeat itself?
So here's hoping Dallas makes it to the Super Bowl this season and gets Denver as the opponent. But instead of beating them down with the run like Denver did in its two SB wins with Elway just driving the bus, here's hoping it is a shootout like last year when these two teams played, and Dallas - due mostly to Romo's heroic magic and brilliance - beats Denver in a 59-52 frikkin overtime shootout.
Because otherwise, if Dallas wins the SB by feeding the opponent buckwheats with a bruising running game and 70 percent 3rd down completion rate, where Romo throws for a fairly pedestrian by today's standards 220 yards and 2 TDs, the haters of course will still have fuel. They'll still have the fodder of "Romo needed a crutch." Just like you hear today from realists, about the heroic but flawed, Elway.
No. Dammit, no. Let's hope for a SB where because of circumstances and our horrible defense, Tony has a 39 for 64 day with 550 yards and six TDs - the game winner in OT - and only two picks which really didn't make much difference except sort of leading to 14 Denver points. Beating the great Payton Manning in the shootout for the ages. A game that will make the league and the networks happy, and will silence the haters for all time.
Go Cowboys!
