Obviously this team has a ton of decisions to make here in this offseason. From the changes to the coaching staff, and the decisions to keep certain free agents, which ones to sign from other teams and then certainly the ratings and grades of the college prospects entering the draft.

Of them all, I keep going back to one decision that will likely have the biggest domino-effect on this team and its future.

And that is regarding Anthony Spencer, who will become an unrestricted free agent in March.

Personally, I’m glad it’s not my decision because it is a tough one. I know there are a lot of fans that immediately see his sack numbers and say “get rid of this guy” or call him a “first-round bust.”

Now obviously he hasn’t been the dynamic pass-rusher that is expected when you’re drafted in the first round. Spencer has been more effective as a run-stopper with an occasional play or two in the passing game.

The reason the decision is tough is because free agency will come about seven weeks before the draft. Sure, it’d be nice to go draft the next Jason Pierre-Paul or Aldon Smith and plug him in as a starter opposite DeMarcus Ware. But even if you drafted that guy before you make the decision on Spencer, there is no guarantee he’s ready to play right away.

And it’s not like there is a solid answer behind Spencer already on this roster. I know Victor Butler flashes some potential at times, but it’s usually on third-down plays. As for being big enough to hold up against the run, I don’t know if Butler has shown the ability to do that yet.

He doesn’t seem big enough to do it consistently. Then again, Jay Ratliff doesn’t look like a nose tackle and DeMarcus Ware wasn’t supposed to be very good against the run either. So you never if Butler can hold up unless you try.

It’s going to be a tough call for this Cowboys team on Spencer. It may be a situation in which he tests the market and whatever he finds, the Cowboys would be willing to match or exceed. Then again, he’s unrestricted. The Cowboys have no option to match if Spencer signs with anyone else.

For those of you who have seen enough and are ready to get rid of him all together, I can’t say I blame you. It’s been four seasons and the guy has 21.5 sacks. That’s two more than Ware got this season alone.

But like or not, there may not be better options available, at least not right away.

For all those people out there who either wonder, or suggest the Cowboys should start blowing this thing up and starting over, the decision they make with Spencer might be your first indication.

It's an easy decision. Cut Spencer lose.

Don't worry Jerruh will overpay to keep this bum.

He's not worth resigning. We need to go in another direction.

Call him a bust and move on.

I'll tell you this, He deserves an extension before Sensabaugh does/did. Whoever gave the go ahead on that...Jerry, Garrett, Ryan, Cisnowski, whoever,...has no business making decisions.

Sensy was tough to motivate working on 1 year deals..,.

I mean, anthony Spencer belongs in the NFL and everything. But he's obviously just maxed out despite 2 seemingly highly respected coordinators and a HOF across from him eating up blocks.

NTM the fear of slacking off.

Let him test the market, if he doesnt get some deal elsewhere maybe you sign him to a 1 or 2yr deal. But no way should he be handed the starting job without legitimate competition in camp.

:confused

is he not?

No.. he's not.

I don't believe there are very many SOLB's who have been as overall consistently productive over the past 3 years as Spencer.

65 tackles, 6 sacks, 3 FF's, and 6 stuffs a year. Don't seem like "bum" numbers.. and if we had any kind of interior pass rush or push up the middle, i bet he'd be in the 8-10 sack range every year, easy.

I have to presume Spencer is uncoachable, because I have to imagine that at some point during the 16 game season, someone on the Cowboys staff discussed the concept of edge containment with him, and he was either too tired, too stupid, or too lazy to figure it out.

As such, I only resign him if there isn't anyone else out there - not that can name a great list of quality OLBs to replace him. And that there is the rub...

He had 3 sacks in the first 3 games, so there were only 3 more the rest of the year. He saw more 1 on 1 blocking than anyone on the team and rarely beat his guy or even pushed the pocket.

He isnt a scrub, but he isnt the answer opp Ware either.

When you look at that production over the last 3 years, im just saying you'd be troubled to find many SOLB's who could measure up. If we think he'll be too much money to resign, that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but we better have a plan on how to replace him because that's a solid player. If we don't resign him we better get a quality FA in here or draft somebody in the first or second round. Idk how many FA SOLB's there are this year, he might be the top of the line.
