I mean that he's better closer to the line of scrimmage than he is further away from it. I mean that he has not shown me the ability to keep fast receivers in front of him or make plays on deep balls. He does not have the speed necessary to pick up a WR who cuts across the middle and challenges him deep. I think he played against a lot of non-NFL caliber QB's in the SEC and benefitted from an amazing front 7.

I think he's the best of a bad crop of 2012 safeties and teams/draft guru's think he's the best looking ugly girl right now.

So what if he is a strong safety? Darren Woodson was a strong safety.

Most teams dont line their safeties up and ask them to repeatedly cover speed WR's way down field anyway.

Barron's strengths are something we have as a major weakness right now. He understands how to play the ball in the air. he takes good angles.

If the guy was as bad down field as you claimed he is, he'd never have the kind of production he has against the pass.

Look at his tape then, because he is making plays on the ball down the field.

Again with the comments you make I keep thinking you just havent seen him play much.

You're last line has been universally panned by others already.

I should have expounded.

Teams don't assign 1st round grades to the top players at positions just because it's a weak draft overall for them.

Woodson was cerebral enough to make the move to Free later in his career. He somehow transitioned from college linebacker to NFL free safety, with a whole lot of Strong Safety in between. He studied film and he positioned himself and others, and excelled at reading offenses. Don't think Barron is anywhere close to that right now.

Also, I don't agree that Barron takes good angles. He cheats a lot and gets inside a lot. That works against Jordan Jefferson. Meanwhile, Eli will drop the ball over you and you'll be watching Cruz do that stupid dance.

I didn't realize others have universally panned my personal opinion of a player.

Would you say your opinion of DeCastro is universally shared?

This is true CMD.

When teams build a draft board starting at player 1 through whatever, the board is stacked relative to the other players. Just because a guy is the best at his position doesnt qualify him to be automatically be selected in the first round.

Likewise, just because a position itself may overall be "weak" doesnt mean that you avoid the position altogether. It just means finding quality later in the draft would be more difficult or unlikely.

We'll see I guess, because Barron is highly regarded for his on field football intelligence which I think is a big part of being able to have success at safety.

Teams overvalue and reach for players at positions all the time. Teams go on a "cornerback run" or a "run on tackles" and teams move up and get one before they are all gone.

It is just my opinion that Barron is being overvalued right now. I don't get persuaded by the masses or popular opinion. I thought Cox was being hyped and I went back and watched more of his film and changed my mind. I've re-watched Barron's games with his recent hype and I still feel he's an above average safety.

If he was only an average safety in a weak crop, nobody would draft him in the first round.

I think its safe to say every NFL team has a first round grade on Barron and most of those probably have him rated somewhere in their top-20

I too have a first round grade on Barron. Just not a Top 15 grade.
