IRVING, Texas – Doug Free was not in a talkative mood on Monday – he said he had not watched the tape of Saturday’s game vs. Cincinnati – but coach Jason Garrett liked what the tackle-turned-guard showed against the Bengals.

At Monday’s practice, Free continued to work at right guard with Jermey Parnell at right tackle. With Mackenzy Bernadeau out with a sprained ankle, David Arkin worked at left guard.

Until the Cowboys know Ronald Leary (or Nate Livings) will be able to play Sept. 8 against the New York Giants, Free will continue to work on the interior.

“I think with the situation that we're in on the offensive line you're just looking for the best five guys and maybe more importantly, the best combination of guys,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We did that for a reason and we're looking for those combinations and I thought that was valuable work in the game. Those guys played into the third quarter and got a lot of snaps in the game. I think we had 82 in the game and they had close to 60 and that's a positive thing for your team, particularly veteran guys who are smart enough to learn from those experiences. We'll see who we get back and we’ll see who’s healthy and make our best decisions.”

Garrett said Free improved as the game went on, as did the entire first-team line.

“That’s really just a function of playing next to each other and having a little bit of experience,” Garrett said. “Doug is a smart guy. You see him improving based on the experience that he’s had. Even within the game, it was impressive that way.”

Are you fucking serious? He got hurt again Saturday?

JFC. This is the worst player we have ever signed.

I hope to God we are watching every second of the waiver wire.

I dont see Bernadeau being hurt and unable to play as a negative.

Garrett made a comment about it was Leary-Fred-Free today.

Then we may as well cut Bernadeau and sign someone else then.

I swear to God I saw him fall Saturday on a run play and it looked like an uncoordinated 320 lb fat girl hitting the ground. He is the biggest sack of shit we have ever had on this team in over 50 years. And then he has the nerve to wear Larry Allen's number.

Whopper cap hit. We actually restructured him this off-season.

Son of a bitch

We need to deactivate him then. Use his roster spot for someone who can contribute something.

Edit: We can't do that. I don't know. It looks like we're stuck with this sack of shit.

Mr. & Mrs. Romo,

We regret to inform you that your son, Tony, was killed in action on September 8th, near Arlington, TX.

Our deepest sympathies.

The Dallas Cowboys.

I could have sworn that I read years ago when journalists suggested to the team that they should try Free at guard because he was so awful at tackle, the team responded by saying because of his strength and other various issues that he was not suited to play guard

I also thought that this Free to guard thing was just a precautionary move that all teams do in case of emergency.

No. I don't think we did. We had it ready to send in and didn't. I may be mixing him up w livings but I'm pretty sure it's bern

No, we definitely restructured Bernadeau. We gave him a $1,535,000 restructuring bonus this offseason.

It was reported Livings did as well but then later reported that his never happened.

just watched all of Frees reps at guard up until halftime

definitely serviceable at guard..much MUCH better in pass protection than he is in the run game...very stable in pass protection..very unable to create running lanes in the run game...does a decent job of getting to the 2nd level and picking up a LB...but thats about it in the run game..

again..hes good enough

That's with only a weeks prep, he might get better. Who knows. As we get folks back, I assume that we will be moving him back to right tackle.

i just watched all of parnells reps at RT

hes not nearly as bad as I anticipated..but hes definitely much leakier than free is in pass protection...he will give up his share of sacks..thats for sure

on the other hand..he gets MUCH MUCH better push than free does in the run game...overall I think Free is a better guard than Parnell is a RT..at least he was in the cincy game...but its splitting hairs...its not much of a difference..if someone thought parnell played better than free I could see it but I would not agree...

I think flipping Free to Guard is smart..Romo prefers the rush to come from the outside rather than up the middle...the middle of the pocket will be clean this season...there will be leaks from both tackle spots...but mainly from the right side...
