Truly one of the most pathetic OL performances in franchise history yesterday. It was butt fucking ugly. As I said yesterday, those who clamored all offseason about Jones and Garrett's refusal to seriously upgrade the OL talent, and instead try to plug in stop-gap guys who werent going to be re-signed by their own teams anyway were right. I was wrong. I had really believed that Callahan could get these guys to at least form an average to above average unit, but instead the OL has gotten worse every week so far.

1) Cowboy RB's attempted 19 rushing plays yesterday. On an unheard of 8 of them they were stopped for a loss of yards. Not 1 yd, not no gain. A LOSS. The OL yielded 4 sacks and were responsible for both fumbles by Romo because of awful protection. Then you factor in all the OL penalties. Doug Free had 3 more false starts, Tyron Smith had another false start. They had at least a couple of holding calls. This wasnt the 85 Bears defense were playing, its the fucking Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A team that gave up over 600 yds total offense, over 40 pts, over 30 first downs and over 500 yds passing LAST WEEK. Then Garrett and Jones have the gall to come out and say after the game they are ok with the OL? WTF??? Fuck you Garrett. Fuck you Jones. You are both dumb as bricks.

2) Hopefully Romo's wife didnt watch the game, if she did she might be imploring him to retire. I am still amazed that not only he was able to get up and walk off the field after that helmet to helmet hit, but actually came back in and played more. He took a beating yesterday.

3) Solid performance by the defense, otherwise we'd have gotten blown off the field again. Hopefully Carter and Claiborne's injuries arnt serious. Both got injured on the final drive of the game. Big game by Ware, 2 more sacks+ forced fumbles. And he was getting blatantly held on the 2nd one (of course there's no call). Never has the league seen such a dominant pass rusher who amazingly according to refs, is never held. Really liked the games by Carter, Lee, Lissemore, Brent and the CB's too. Jenkins showed why someone is going to pay him big coin in the offseason. he locked down on every Tampa WR he was on.

4) Joe DeCamillis is the worst special teams coach in the league right now. Guy is utterly clueless. WTF was that motion thing on the punt return play where they fumbled? (Should have easily been a blocked punt). Then an ill advised onsides kick, which he blamed after the game on faulty execution. Hey fuckwad, Bailey is one of the best kickers in the league. Having him onsides kick right into the middle of the field and become one of the primary recovery guys and potentially get piled on or etc etc is STUPID. FUCK YOU DeCamilis

5) This Jason Witten stuff is painful to watch. Love the guy and he is one of the all time greats, but he is hurting the team by being on the field. Having him trot out there opening night I'm sure was uplifting for the team, but his play on the field has gotten worse every week. He is obviously not right. He cant catch a cold and his blocking is awful, plus he's had a multitude of false starts himself. Its time to sit him down and not let him back out there until they know for certain he is 100%. James Hanna should be getting some snaps on passing downs, and yet the last two games I dont think I've seen him on the field for one offensive play.

6) Tough loss with Barry Church's injury. He had really improved as a player and was playing good football. I'm sure we'll see Mario Butler or someone else off the street signed by tomorrow to replace him. Butler makes sense, he knows the defense and was playing some safety anyway. I dont think we can count on getting anything out of Matt Johnson this year, even once he is healthy. He's just missed too much.

7) I think getting Jay Ratliff back could be huge for the defense. The one thing we're lacking is that push up the middle on passing downs, and the one game he did play in preseason he looked as explosive off the ball as he has in a couple of seasons. Would be great to have him for MNF vs Chicago. And its a pipe dream, but Kevin Kowalski is due back not long after the bye too. Maybe he can come in and solidify the middle of the OL by taking Cook's position. Everyone got excited when Cook came in vs NYG and the offense did ok, but he was pretty mediocre last week and he was terrible yesterday. He got blown up ro just flat beaten on alot of plays. Not that he was alone, the rest of the OL was horrendous too.

8) It makes too much sense so I am sure our staff wont do it, but they should bench Doug Free for Parnell ASAP. Free has totally lost it as a player and is probably the worst player on the team at this point.

9) Refs were absolutely horrible yesterday. They mis-spotted the ball badly on several plays. They totally blew the call on Claiborne's PI (was obviously offensive PI, their WR had BOTH hands on Caliborne's back and pushed off, putting Claiborne on the ground) and on Romo's 2nd fumble there should have been a hands to the face call on the Bucs DE opp Tyron Smith. He had the face mask the entire play before the fumble. Then there's the b/s no call on Romo's play where there was helmet to helmet contact, in plain sight for all to see. Nobody could have simply "missed" it. Ware was held probably 4 or 5 times that could have been easily called, yet none were. One was on his 2nd sack/fumble play. Also, for the 2nd or 3rd time this year they allowed the other team to have like 13 guys in the huddle offensively. That happened on the play where Ryan was seen cussing at the ref.

Just a pathetic performance. If they play this way next Monday vs Chicago we'll get beat by 5 tds. very disappointing to see this kind of garbage, just no progress at all offensively (its worse) and defensively, while two of the performances have been pretty good we still have a lack of consistent pas rush and still cant force turnovers. We havent had an int by a DB in forever. The special teams, minus Bailey and Bryant's occasional big return are just atrocious. The team is plagued by stupid penalties (usually by the same 2 or 3 players). Its just pathetic.

Great read. And spot on.

Another thing I'd throw out there.... and I'm not big on conspiracy theories or anything... but I think the ref that threw the hat into the end zone had some rooting interest in the Bucs.

Ive watched that play and there is literally no reason for that hat to be thrown into the end zone. None. Whatsoever.

No one came close to running out of bounds.

claibornes injury was a finger issue. When they took him off the field they were taping his fingers.

carter got banged up early in the game, on the play before carter made the third down tackle on clark he injured i think his left shoulder and was trying desperately to come out of the game and they made him stay in, he made the stop.

I think it was just lingering with him. Austin had x-rays on his ribs and spears was nursing that knee....

we need to steal this bears game one way or another and get ratliff, coleman, spears and albright healthy.

nate livings injured his hand early in the game also and dockery was in there for like 5 plays....we had two of the better runs of the day behind dockery.....sad

Oh... a few of my day after thoughts:

  • He was a punk all off season, but credit where credit due: Hats off to Mike Jenkins for coming in and playing well. Great play on the ball to deflect that long pass to Jackson. Played physical and with confidence all game long.
  • Major props to Sean Lee. I made this comment in the game day thread, and like most of what I post (right guys?) it bears repeating: We've got a jillion dollars invested in our secondary, and our biggest ball hawk is a white inside linebacker.
  • Major props also to DeMarcus Ware. 2 sacks. 2 forced fumbles. And while a few guys got close a few times, no one else took the QB down. It boggles my mind how this team is unable to develop or generate a consistant pass rusher opposite Ware. I long for the days of Greg Ellis and his 8 sacks a year.
  • Bruce Carter looks legit. He was cloaking Dallas Clark most of the game. It's early, but it looks like we have an incredible ILB duo.
  • Speaking of... was Dan Connor ever on the field for the defense? I loved the signing in the off season, but he's pretty much proven to be useless and washed up. More of a liability than anything.
  • Happy to see Orie Lemon make a play. He's my homeboy. We've tweeted, so we're down like that.
  • Sucks for Barry Church. Work hard player who took the time to hone his skills. He didn't have a lot of speed to begin with, so a blown achilles will likely be a career ender for him. And I hate that.
  • Our defense is literally carrying this team. The one game they played poorly (Seattle) we got blown out. But they saved us against NY and now TB. That Giants game would've/could've been a whole different ballgame had we not had that goal line stand to start. And outside of that early Tampa touchdown on the short field, the defense didn't let Josh Freeman do anything.
  • Our offensive line is bad. That isn't news to anyone. I agree with Dbair that those who bashed the signings of Livings and Berny were right. And those that criticized Doug Free were righter than right. I, for one, wasn't a huge fan of the two guards we signed and hoped we'd address guard in the draft, but I at least thoght Doug Free would be respectable at RT. He's been horrid. It's time for Parnell to get some looks because, quite frankly, it isn't as though he'd do worse. If nothing else, a benching might wake Free up.
  • Which leads to the next point... our offense is good. Even very good. Provided we're not playing a tough, scrapy, physical defense. You put us up against a weak front seven, and we'll hang thirty. You put us up against a team that plays angry, and it's a dog fight just to get a first down.
  • The only hope I have is that the Oline will get better as the year progresses, and I think that is a legit possibility. If we can develop some consistancy/cohesiveness.... then maybe... maybe we'll do better.
  • But I hope this is at least an eye opener to Jerry Jones. I hope he now sees that it doesn't matter what you have on the outsides or in the backfield if you can't block.

I think Jerry is a victim of this teams old success. What I mean is, he see's and remembers how those early 90's Cowboys had a dominant Oline with cast offs. Newton, Tuinea, Gesek... they were all cast offs for the most part. Plug in great coaching and they played well.

I think Jerry still thinks that you can get buy with that. Hence, not dedicating resources (save Tyron) to Oline, and instead relying on a once great relic (Houck) and now the alledged best in the business in Callahan to fix them.

I hope Jerry will recognize finnally that you need talent in the trenches. Which is ironic because he's a former guard himself.

Yep, good stuff david.

Absolutely. Even if the ref thought OTree had stepped out of bounds, he threw his cap into the field of play, right into OTree's path. You don't do that. Given our luck with injuries to this point, I'm shocked he didn't rupture his achilles on the play. Definitely cost us a touchdown.

I think the incompetence of the refs has literally turned the level of football in this league to shit in three weeks. I mean, look around the league, and you have just piss poor play everywhere. Mike and Mike this morning are talking about how the Jets played an awful game and still won. Only three teams have yet to lose a game, which is unheard of after three weeks.

I thought Romo was getting the worst of it yesterday, he wasn't. Matt Schaub almost had his head torn off. Don't think for a second the refs aren't affecting the offenses around the league generally playing shitty, or the defenses teeing off on QBs and WRs. These refs can't control the game.

If this goes on much longer, there may not be a league left.

Dbair - funny how you love to rip the officiating

but the reality is, without their blown fumble returned for a touchdown call...we probably lose that game

I dont think it was about being right with the oline. I just didnt understand the philosophy of bringing in cast off's to fill our glaring weekness.
Jerry even came out and said our window is closing. It might be closing a little bit faster than he thinks if Romo keeps the shots he does.
I have serious concern about 4 of the 5 lineman we currently have starting. Free looks like a backup, Bernadeuax is horribly inconsistent, Cook is what he is(he is trying his hardest against tough circumstances) and Livings brings very little

We all wrote in the swap of Free and Smith as a done deal without issue, but it has proven to be more of a bigger issue than anticipated

I'm so tired of this line and ownership.

heres the other thing with this team

everyone is getting all butt hurt over the offensive line - and i get it, they are absolutely atrocious...but this is exactly what I expected and its probably the best case scenario...aside from hitting a hail mary on these scrub OLine players, which obviously didnt happen

we came into this offseason with far too many holes. i said it all offseason, and im saying it again..there was no fuckin way to fix all the holes this team had

we put all of our resources into the defense...and as of right this second, it is paying off...

the reverse could have been, sign a guard, draft a C/G...have a super high powered offense (in theory) and have a shitty ass defense that is letting us down..

there was no way possible this train wreck was going to be fixed in one year...its only 3 games but it looks like the moves we made defensively are paying off nicely...

hopefully one more offseason is enough, but im not even sure it is...we have to completely overhaul the offensive line, to the tune of at least 2-3 new starters...and we still need more pressure players on defense..

dont misconstrue this post..this team has tons of holes, glaring ones at that...and it has a long ways to go before it fixes them all

Carr, Jenkins, Scandrick could have been your DB's. Draft lineman first and second. Not really possible but just a thought

Jenkins doesn't play week 1...we lose week 1 for sure

Which OL could we have drafted in round 1? Decastro at 14 clearly would have been a reach

I don't think this team ever had plans to sign Jenkins either, so forecasting, CB was a big need. But I am speculating here. I would not mind signing Jenkins After this season and keeping a stacked secondary

Tremendous stuff, db.

I'll add:

• How about some props for Ogletree? He's playing some really good football.
• The most consistently excellent players on the team not named Demarcus Ware are Dan Bailey and Chris Jones.
• Jerry and Red are gonna end Romo's career if they don't get serious about the OL.

the hat thrown in the endzone was because austin was out of bounds on the play not ogletree

The prob wasn't that the hat was thrown. The prob was that the hat was thrown in the middle of the fucking field.

Is Romo still like the only QB in the league who has never gotten a roughing the passer call?

Yeah, well, about 25 other teams say otherwise.

Also take into consideration how shitty everyone else's OL are
