Surprising to me anyway. I thought with the way they lost on MNF, a short week and even more injuries added in, with Carolina playing better the last month (very nearly beat KC, Tampa and Philly) I expected a loss and didnt expect us to even make much of a game of it.
But Carolina went back to playing the way they had most of this yr and last yr and we actually played ok in some areas. We won and it didnt damage the draft position too much (14th currently) and I do expect that to ultimately improve, as I absolutely believe we'll lose out from here.
1) We've been talking about it for eons here. The Cowboys have zero accountability for anything. The owner wont fire the completely inept GM. Players that perform poorly are rarely replaced. So I guess I shouldn't be surprised that less than a week after this scrub Oruwariye completely blew a game with a boneheaded play that there he was, rewarded for his stupidity by actually STARTING ON DEFENSE. And he was awful. Gave up a nearly uncontested 20 yd play on opening drive, wiped out an incompletion with a stupid offsides call and then inexplicably blowing a coverage at the end of the half, and allowing an 83 yd TD. From there it appears he was FINALLY benched, but the dude shouldnt even be on the team after what he did Monday. The on the other side of the ball, despite their #1 draft pick LT Tyler Guyton being declared healthy, he was on the bench again to start the game. 6 days after Chuma Egoga was a human turnstile in the 4th qtr he was "rewarded" by starting again, and he was awful from the get go. A stupid mental error led to a 5yd penalty that negated a nearly 30 yd play to CeeDee Lamb, and his blocking was suspect. I thought he was benched but then they showed Edoga going to the lockerroom with an injury. Once Guyton came in the OL was eons better. Why would Edoga still be starting ahead of Guyton at this point of the season? He needs reps. Edoga has no future here, Guyton does. Our entire locker room continues to see that it doesn't matter how bad you perform or what kind of stupidity you do on the field, you are in no danger of losing your job here.
2) Rico Dowdle continues to make Jones and McCarthy look dumber and dumber every damn week. Third straight game the guy set a career high in rushing yards (all three games over 100 yds as well, I think this is the first time in NFL history a player has done this). For the season Dowdle is just under 900 yds rushing and now seems a lock to go well over 1000. He's also averaging an impressive 5.0 yds per carry. Amazingly, the dipshit coaches STILL won't utilize him much in the redzone though, despite his great success. He got only ONE rush attempt in the redzone yesterday. Overall, one of the very few bright spots on this dreadful team this yr, and probably lining himself up a nice payday in the offseason (somewhere). As a team we had 211 rushing yards (149 for Dowdle). Both season highs.
3) Speaking of guys lining themselves up for nice payday, Osa Odighizuwa has made himself quite a bit of cash the second half of this year. He is one of the dominant interior pass rushers in this league now and was unblockable at times again yesterday. Had one sack (I think he'll get credit for at least a half on another play) and now has 3 1/2 sacks and 6 1/2 TFL's in the 6 games. He's gonna get a pretty big contract in FA, and unfortunately it will be another hole for us to fill when he leaves. Chauncey Golston is another guy that would be worth extending, he isnt a star but is definitely a reliable rotation piece. As mentioned in previous weeks, signing Hoffman and Bass to short term extensions would be smart as well, they are both proving to be quality pieces and with 4 taking up so much cap space, we need as many inexpensive adequate starters as we can get.
4) First game without Overshown, and rookie Marist Liufau stepped in nicely. Really good game for him that included a key forced fumble and had a couple of really nice hits. Arrow is pointing upward for him.
5) Cooper Rush is not very good. He has no arm whatsoever, his accuracy is really bad and he constantly makes throws causing the receivers and TE's to get absolutely obliterated. He also is a keystone cops like ball handler at times (incl twice yesterday). But he now has 10 tds and only 3 picks, while taking only 11 sacks overall. Oh and he's a boneheaded special teams gaffe away from a 4 game win streak. Rush makes 2.5 mils per yr. The clod that makes 60 mils a yr has a slightly higher comp %, just slightly higher yds per attempt, only 2 more tds, almost 3 times as many interceptions and double the amount of sacks. The Prescott deal looks worse and worse every fucking week and the clown owner and Spawn are already poor mouthing about how they wont be able to do ANYTHING in free agency next yr because of the cap. This is the worst run team in sports, hands down.
6) I don't get why people are enamored with McCarthy coming back, like they think he's actually EARNED it or something. We had 14 more accepted penalties yesterday, and most of them were just stupid. This team has been undisciplined and unprepared on a week to week basis since he took over. Yes he has the Jones-tards doing stupid crap, yes we have injuries. He can't control that, but he can control how the team prepares and how disciplined they are. He can control how bad they are at tackling and other fundamental stuff we suck at. He doesn't deserve to be back as the HC and should have been fired after that Green Bay playoff debacle. If he returns as HC next yr, the results will be no different than what we have seen the last 5 yrs.
7) Another week, more injuries. TJ Bass went out and never returned, Jourdan Lewis was injured during the game. I don't know what happened to Tyler Smith (hope it was just them pulling him because the game was in hand) but he did not see the field on at least the last series of the game and maybe the last two series. Lamb got beaten to hell again but managed to stay in. Dude has had another great yr despite mediocre to poor QB play all yr and QB's throwing passes that constantly lead him into massive hits.
8) Really don't understand why they don't throw to the TE's more. Ferguson is a really good player and Schoonmaker produced when Ferg was out. Both are big targets and with good hands, and both can get RAC. You'd think they'd be more involved overall (and especially in the redzone) and ESPECIALLY with a painfully average to mediocre WR group (other than Lamb). But they are not. Ferg caught only two balls yesterday and Schoon had none. For the yr they have one TD (combined). Again, just seems to be stubborn (or just inept) coaching.
Can't wait for this miserable season to be over. Even in winning games the team is almost unwatchable and then there's the Jones' tards there, who I absolutely abhor and wish both would just cease to have any involvement with the team forever. It's criminal how poorly they run this team and continue to waste season after season after season.
