DALLAS COWBOYS OBSERVATION DECK:

Here’s what stood out from Day 7 of Dallas Cowboys’ training camp practice Sunday in Oxnard, Calif.:

• The Cowboys had their annual Blue-White Scrimmage of training camp Sunday, and it mostly involved third-string players.

• The biggest camp crowd yet showed up Sunday, numbering 8,479 fans to bring the total attendance to 29,816.

• The third-team defense looked much sharper than the offense in the scrimmage. The offense had several three-and-outs before a late drive that was led by QB Nick Stephens.

• RB Phillip Tanner started the scrimmage with a nice run to the left side.

• DT Landon Cohen had a sack early in the scrimmage against QB Alex Tanney.

• Rookie RB Joseph Randle dropped a pass to the right flat in the scrimmage from QB Alex Tanney.

• Rookie TE Gavin Escobar dropped a pass thrown to the right seam by QB Alex Tanney.

• Late in the scrimmage, the drive led by QB Nick Stephens was boosted by a pass interference penalty against CB Devin Smith. Stephens threw a deep pass down the right sideline to Tim Benford, and Smith arrived early to make contact.

• QB Nick Stephens then made a nice, back-shoulder pass to WR Eric Rogers who beat CB Xavier Brewer in coverage.

• RB Lance Dunbar had a big gain on a run up the middle early in team drills, getting into the secondary quickly.

• LB Kyle Wilber and LB Ernie Sims stuffed RB Phillip Tanner in team drills on a run to the right side.

• Rookie RB Joseph Randle was able to get around the corner on the outside on a run to the right for a good gain in team drills. He also had another good gain earlier in team drills, quickly getting into the secondary and making a nice cut to his left for more yards. After the play against the third-team defense, starting DT Jason Hatcher yelled from the sideline, “That’s how we do [it]? Let’s go.”

• In 2-on-2 drills – interior offensive linemen against defensive linemen – DT Nick Hayden put OG Nate Livings on his back.

• WR Anthony Amos dropped a punt.

• For a second consecutive day, WR Jared Green did a good job keeping both feet in bounds in the back of the end zone for a touchdown catch in 7-on-7 red zone drills on a pass from QB Alex Tanney. Later in team drills, Green short-armed a pass over the middle that he appeared to be in position to catch from Tanney.

• On the first play of a series of team drills, QB Tony Romo found a wide open TE Jason Witten down the left seam for a touchdown pass off of a play fake.

• WR Tim Benford had an up-and-down day. He dropped a pass to the middle of the field early in team drills, but rookie safety J.J. Wilcox was flagged for a hit on a defenseless receiver on the play. Shortly afterward, Benford couldn’t catch a fade pass to the end zone that CB Brandon Underwood appeared to get a fingertip on. Benford came back later to make a catch on a slant in a two-minute drill, beating Underwood inside. He also had a catch from QB Alex Tanney in traffic, with safety Micah Pellerin all over him.

• DE Cameron Sheffield took down RB Kendial Lawrence for a big loss on a run to the left. Sheffield shot through the line of scrimmage to giveLawrenceno chance.

• DT Jason Hatcher was flagged for encroachment in team drills and didn’t agree with the call, letting the officials know it.

• CB Sterling Moore had a pass breakup defending a receiver on a slant pass in a two-minute situation.

• Kicker Dan Bailey missed a field goal in team work but came back later to drill a 50-plus-yarder.

• Rookie WR Terrance Williams did a good job of catching a low pass from QB Tony Romo on a deep crossing route in a two-minute situation.

• In a matter of just a few plays in team drills, DE DeMarcus Ware beat LT Tyron Smith twice for sacks of QB Tony Romo. One time, he knocked the football from Romo’s hand.

• CB Brandon Carr just missed an interception in two-minute drills on a poor pass by QB Tony Romo. Carr was in front of WR Dwayne Harris when the ball arrived along the right sideline, and Harris did a good job of jarring the ball from Carr’s hands.

• Rookie CB B.W. Webb had his best play of camp when he jumped a slant route that was intended for WR Tim Benford. Webb intercepted QB Kyle Orton’s pass to the left side and he would have taken it all the way back for a touchdown.

• WR Eric Rogers made a nice touchdown catch on a jump-ball, deep pass from QB Alex Tanney in team drills. Tanney had a good day and on this play, looked a lot like Tony Romo avoiding the pass-rush. Tanney stepped up in the pocket and slung the ball to the left end zone, whereRogersout-jumped safeties Eric Frampton and Micah Pellerin for the catch.

• Former Cowboys player Charles Haley was at practice Sunday.

• The NBC Sunday Night Football broadcast crew was on hand for practice, including Cris Collinsworth, Michele Tafoya and Al Michaels.

• Coach Jason Garrett still licks his fingers sometimes before he throws passes in drills or just tossing the football back and forth before practice.

• The Cowboys didn’t have a morning walk-through practice Sunday after their first late practice ofcampSaturdaynight. They didn’t have team meetings Saturday night after practice and held a barbecue.

How are you feeling about the season now mid? Optimistic mid back yet?

Not really optomistic. I think it'll come down to us or the Giants. But I hate the state of our DL right now and I think that'll be a major problem as the year wears on.

That said, I could see us winning 10 games. Doubtful about winning a playoff game though.

About the only thing I'm really stoked about this year is watching Dez Bryant.

Our DL just has no depth...obviously a huge problem.

However, ware, spencer, and hatcher make for a really solid group when they are on the field. Ratliff won't last all 16...we know that. But if the other 3 do, we might be ok. If any of those 3 go down for large portions then DL is screwed

You'd think so, but until the real games begin, you really don't know how they're all going to do in their new roles. They're all old too. Thats why I said as the season goes on.

I mean, we suffer one injury and we're having to play guys like Ben Bass, Monte Taylor, or Cameron Scheffield. And Kiffins defense is predicated on getting pressure with just the front four.

Spencer Hatcher Ratliff Ware

That's not a bad line. Lissemore is due for a breakout season. Bass has sounded solid. That guy boozeman likes has as well. I'll be optimistic and say we have players who will step up.

They are?

Ware- 30
Hatcher- 31
Ratliff- 31
Spencer- 29

Lissemore- 25
Bass- 23
Selvie- 26
Hayden- 27
Taylor- 24
Calloway- 25
Cohen- 26
Long- 23
Igbinosun- 22
Shaefering-29
Pendelton- 29
Crawford- 23 *IR

I listed them in the order they're likely to make the team. Obviously, the lower you get on the list the more it could change. But I certainly wouldn't say they are all old. You'd have a better argument if you said they were shitty. After the starters, anyway.

I read somewhere that Kowalski didn't do very well on Sunday.

Broaddus maybe?

* Have to say that I was disappointed in the way that guard Kevin Kowalski played this afternoon. With he and Phil Costa in the middle of that second offensive line, I really believed that they would anchor these two young tackles, Darrion Weems and Edawn Coughman but that wasn’t the case at all. From my live look, Kowalski wasn’t at his best today and the line play suffered for it. Up until this point, his play had been rock solid but it didn’t matter who he was matched up with, it was a struggle. He was beaten with quickness from Ben Bass and power from Nick Hayden and Jerome Long. There were too many reps today where Kowalski was reaching, off balance and just in bad football position. To his credit, he took a ton of reps and fought through it but I had honestly seen him play so much better this last week. It will be a good tape for him to see and learn from because I have seen him play better and I know he can.

Ok, if you say so.

I don't know what was funny about that post. Seems that laughing smiliey was unneccessary IMO.

Ratliff is 30, but he's got wear and tear on his body.

Even Ware has been getting knicked up lately with shoulder and neck injuries the past few years.

Spencer? Banged up right now, and wildly inconsistant to start.

I mean, Hatcher is the youngest due to fewest snaps... and he's going to be asked to be the tallest 3 technique in the history of football (dont' fact check that - just take me at my word).

And our most seasoned and "talented" back up is a former 7th round white guy from a college as big as a mini-mall.

And this is what is going to guard the interior for Romo... we're fucked!

I agree. I'd feel alot better with the DL had not Brent fucked up, and Crawfod got hurt.

Half the youth from that list probably won't even make the team. But, while their around they sure bring down that average age so GO COWBOYS!
