IRVING, Texas -- Long known as a team that saw kickers as interchangeable pieces, the Dallas Cowboys have signed Dan Bailey to a seven-year deal, the team announced Thursday.

Bailey, who turns 26 in Sunday, was set to be a restricted free agent. The deal runs through 2020.

The Cowboys were likely to use the second-round tender on Bailey worth $2.124 million before striking the long-term deal.

Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2011, Bailey has made 88 of 98 field goal attempts in his three seasons, missing just four kicks in the last two seasons. He made 28 of 30 tries in 2013, including six of seven from 50 yards or more. In his first two seasons Bailey made 5-of-9 attempts from 50-yards or more. He also had 57 touchbacks.

Bailey has kicked a franchise-record eight game-winning field goals since joining the Cowboys.

The only other time the Cowboys put a serious investment into a kicker came in 2006 when they signed Mik Vanderjagt to a three-year, $5.4 million deal that included a $2.5 million signing bonus. Vanderjagt was cut that season after poor form.

Since 2011, only Josh Scobee of the Jacksonville Jaguars has a better percentage than Bailey (91.0 to 90.8). Justin Tucker has made 68 of 74 attempts in 2012-13.

With 11 more made attempts, Bailey would qualify for the all-time percentage leader. Vanderjagt is currently the most active kicker in NFL history, converting 86.5% of his kicks.

Outside of Dez and Tyron, no other current player should be extended.

We always come out of nowhere with a nonsense extension (Sean Lissemore 3 years ago, Barry Church 2 years ago, Scandrick last year) so I won't be shocked when we sign Kevin Kowalski to a 9-year deal.

So, it comes to 3.3 Million per season.

according to dallascowboys.com....
But the length of the contract will likely help the Cowboys keep his salary cap figure down for a few years, allowing them to have some wiggle room for other players.

Good re-sign here. Am glad he is staying long term.

It can be argued that he does his job better than any other player on this team.

Dan Bailey contract extension a no-brainer for Dallas Cowboys

By Rainer Sabin

The Cowboys made a good investment Thursday, when they signed Dan Bailey to a seven-year contract extension.

On a team that lost as much as it has won the last three seasons, swinging back and forth between good and bad, Bailey was as close to a sure thing as the Cowboys had. Converting 90.8 percent of his field goal attempts since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2011, he has been a model of consistency.

Considering the Cowboys have played 22 regular-season games decided by seven points or fewer since the start of the 2012 campaign – the most in the league during the last two seasons – locking up Bailey for the long term was always going to be viewed as a wise decision.

Bailey, during his abbreviated tenure in Dallas, has already established a club record with eight game-winning field goals. He’s money in the clutch and everyone knows it.

Even more encouraging than Bailey’s performance under pressure is the progress he made since joining the Cowboys. Remember that Bailey didn’t initially handle kickoffs as a rookie as the team tasked the wildly inaccurate David Buehler with that role. Bailey’s leg strength, at the time, was viewed as lacking. Now it’s one of his many assets. This season Bailey was 10th in the league in touchback percentage, producing a better rate than noted kickers Sebastian Janikowski, Phil Dawson and Robbie Gould.

It’s enough reason to feel even more bullish about Bailey, who has offered evidence that he’s only going to get better the next seven seasons while the fact remains he’s already pretty darn good.

I have no idea how the salary cap works but a 7 year contract for a kicker feels like the stupidest shit.

They get the yips one year and they're done. People are still kicking Shayne Graham around so why do we need to lock Bailey down through 2020?

I'm thinking we went into it with no real leverage - up against the cap and all. So the agent was all like 'make it long term and we'll go easy on you and give you cap space this year'

I don't know.

Probably the fact that we've had about as much luck with kickers as I've had with women played a role as well. (1 good one in the past 15 years or so)

Bailey is more than a 1yr wonder though. He's gotten better every yr, and his leg seems to have gotten stronger every yr.

Even if what you say happened (yips, he loses it etc etc). This contract isnt so much money that it kills us to release him.

He's a great young kicker, locking him up long term makes sense when so many games in this league are won/lost by a FG or less.
