The NFL announced Tuesday that Super Bowl LV will be held in Los Angeles. The Rams are moving to the city this season, and their $2.6 billion stadium set to open in 2019 will host 2021's big game.

The next time AT&T Stadium could be up for hosting is 2022, leaving more than a decade between hosting stints for Arlington.

AT&T Stadium was home to Super Bowl XLV in February 2011. It was a multi-year effort that raised millions for charity and created lasting programs. It also generated plenty of embarrassments when it left some fans without seats, treacherous snow fell from the stadium injuring workers and miserable weather shut down outdoor activities for much of the week.

The economic impact of Super Bowl XLV was estimated at $611.7 million.

Frank Supovitz, the former NFL vice president in charge of Super Bowl planning, said last year that this isn’t a sign the region has fallen out of favor.

"I believe that the metroplex and AT&T Stadium are well-positioned to host another Super Bowl sometime after the latest wave of new stadium openings," he said. "And that the well-documented challenges of Super Bowl XLV will help the planners focus on ensuring a much better outcome next time around."

The NFL typically awards a Super Bowl to new stadiums in warm-weather cities and new domed stadiums in cold-weather cities. Half the 20 Super Bowls played between 1999 and 2018 were or will be in new stadiums.

Atlanta will open a $1.4 billion stadium in 2017. The Miami Dolphins are spending about $400 million on stadium renovations. NFL officials have said the Dolphins needed to upgrade the stadium to host future Super Bowls.

South Florida and New Orleans are unsurprising picks. Both are go-to Super Bowl locations thanks to attractions like South Beach and the French Quarter. Each has hosted a record 10 Super Bowls.

With all of these new mega-stadiums coming online, I wonder if AT&T stadium will take a hit. More competition.

I remember some dispute about who was at fault for the seating fiasco, Jerry or the NFL. Sounds like the NFL aren't blaming themselves.

Hope Jerry never sees another Super Bowl, playing or hosting, as long as he's alive. Fuck that guy.

stupid tradition to award a SB to a city with a new stadium. keep the game where it's reliably warm.
