Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones: ‘We’re in great shape at running back’
By Rainer Sabin
8:22 pm on October 20, 2013

PHILADELPHIA — On Sunday, DeMarco Murray missed his 10th game since entering the NFL in 2011. The running back, who suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee Oct. 13, was among a group of six inactive players that included linebacker DeVonte Holloman, guard David Arkin, tackle Darrion Weems, defensive end DeMarcus Ware and fellow running back Lance Dunbar.

Yet team owner Jerry Jones said Murray and Dunbar — the latter hasn’t played the past two games because of a strained right hamstring — could be available when the Cowboys play Detroit next Sunday.

“I think we’re in great shape at running back,” Jones said. “We should have him possibly at a point in time. I don’t know if it will be next week. You could have all three of these guys back at the same time. I mean, have Dunbar and Murray back and then have [Joseph] Randle.”

Randle started in Murray’s place on Sunday and gained 65 yards on 19 carries. But Jones still thinks Murray is the team’s top running back.

“Murray’s a dominant back out there,” he said. “It takes its toll on the defense when he’s out there.”

That tells me a trade is imminent. He's trying to gain leverage through the media.

Or has the trade deadline passed?

I'd like to see Murray Traded. We could have traded him to Indy for a 2nd rounder.

How much do we usually get for a one-legged runningback on the open market? Maybe throw in David Arkin and Josh Brent?

Is there a position on the team that isn't a strength?

It's almost unfair at this point. Dallas is so fucking flush with talent at every position that even if you had $50M in cap space and 10 first round draft picks, you likely wouldn't improve this team at all.

Yeah, remember the post draft "DL is a strength" comments he made? Guy is an idiot. You can't even take him serious. I really wish the media would put him on ignore.

The media keeps feeding the troll.

The guy makes no sense and has no clue what he's doing when it comes to anything football related, but all those idiots flock to him like he's Bill Belicheck.

I don't think anyone will take Austin with the contract Jerry handed him.

Why would we want to trade him? It sux that he has trouble staying healthy, but he is a good player when he is out there. He is definitely the best RB on this team by a large margin. The offense hasnt been as good without him since he went out early in the Redskin game.

You can't count on him. We may as well get something before he leaves.

They don't have to. They can get him to agree to a new deal as part of the trade (as we did with Roy Williams). Miles will do it because it means more guaranteed (and immediate) money in his pocket. I'm not sure why more fans don't get that. Unlike NBA and MLB, NFL contracts are not guaranteed and signing bonus money only effects the signing (previous team). The new team could also get him for this year and cut him with zero cap hit in the off-season.

Here's what his remaining contract looks like for us.
YEAR - BASE - BONUS - SALARY CAP - DEAD MONEY
2013 - 840,000 - 2,748,400 - 3,588,400 -10,602,000
2014 - 5,500,000 - 2,748,400 - 8,248,400 - 7,853,600
2015 - 6,888,000 - 2,748,400 - 9,636,400 - 5,105,200
2016 - 11,380,000 - 1,178,400 - 12,558,400 - 2,356,800
2017 - VOIDED

Here's what it would like for a team that traded for him:
YEAR - BASE - BONUS - SALARY CAP - DEAD MONEY
2013 - 840,000 - 0 - 840,000 - 0
2014 - 5,500,000 - 0 - 5,500,000 - 0
2015 - 6,888,000 - 0 - 6,888,000 - 0
2016 - 11,380,000 - 0 - 11,380,000 - 0
^none of this is guaranteed.
