DALLAS -- Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has some unsolicited advice for fellow billionaire Jerry Jones: Stick to your guns on Jason Garrett.

“I think Jerry would be crazy to fire Jason Garrett,” Cuban said Thursday of the Dallas Cowboys owner, without prompting on the subject. “Not that he would, but the hardest thing to do -- and I’ve said this before -- is hire a head coach. That’s the hardest thing to do in professional sports, in my opinion.

“I think unless a coach loses the locker room, regardless of the sport, or there’s just something fundamentally wrong, you go with it. Then you go out and you get the best players you can and you go to war. I’m not an NFL expert by a long shot, but I don’t seem to see any of those while watching the Cowboys fans as a fan.”

Garrett’s job security is a subject of much discussion with the Cowboys in jeopardy of missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, although Jones has been adamant that Garrett would return next season. If the Cowboys lose to the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday's de facto NFC East title game, Dallas will have finished 8-8 in each of Garrett’s first three full seasons as head coach.

How can an owner justify so much patience with the process without any tangible progress?

Cuban said it’s counterproductive to be swayed by public opinion on a position so crucial to a franchise’s success.

“Because you don’t care about the media,” Cuban said. “The last thing you care about is how the media responds. Maybe you come out after the fact and explain your logic so everyone understands and you have some transparency.

“I don’t give a damn about what Twitter says or what the feedback is on Twitter or in the media, because that’s the worst way to make a decision. You’ve got to do what you know is right, based off the information that you have. I don’t think Jerry will do anything different than that. It’s exactly what I would do. We’ve had situations where everybody was questioning us. I told you guys many a time: ‘Talk all you want. We’ll still be here figuring it out.’”

Cuban, who has employed three head coaches and fired only one during his 14-year ownership tenure, said his rule of thumb is to never any consider firing a coach unless he has an upgrade in mind. The attributes Cuban considers crucial for a head coach are “knowledge of the game, respect of the players and ability to adjust and learn.”

“I think Jason, from all I know, exemplifies that,” said Cuban, who said he has met Garrett a few times but doesn’t know the Cowboys coach well. “You may not like what the Cowboys have done on the field, but I’ve never looked at them and said they’re not playing hard. I mean, they always look like they’re busting ass. You’ve got guys playing hurt, guys working to get back on the field.”

According to Cuban, the chances are that the Cowboys’ inability to get off the mediocrity treadmill is not a coaching issue. He said it’s the front office’s job to put the coach in the best possible position to succeed.

“You look and see what you can add and what you can do to keep them healthy,” Cuban said. “A lot of guys are getting hurt. You have to ask how, why and if you can do anything to prevent that.

“It’s like us. We didn’t look to say, ‘OK, 41-41, this is OK. What do we do to get a little bit better?’ We basically blew it up. Nothing to do with Rick [Carlisle]. We didn’t look at Rick and say, ‘Well, you were only 41-41, 36-30 the year before.’ It was never a reflection of Rick.”

Asked if he would fire the Cowboys’ general manager, which just happens to be Jones, Cuban was diplomatic. He noted that the Cowboys seemed to use a group approach for that job, as the Mavs do, with the owner having the final say.

“I would just look to see what I could change,” Cuban said. “Is it talent evaluation in the first round? Second round? Injuries? Use of quarterbacks? All of this is qualified by saying, I have no f------ clue. I don’t know football at all.”

The guy who soberly hired and kept Avery Johnson around has head coaching advise for others? That's rich.

Cuban dismantled a pretty good title team and has spent years ruining Dirk's HOF career by failing over and over again to bring in any sort of all star-caliber support.

The fact that Cuban approves of Ginger pretty much "ratifies" my stance.

Do you want the truth? Or only to hear what you want to hear?

Either way, you'll get the truth. Jerry did not try and make Garrett quit. That's utterly silly. He sees the benefit of having a Coach long term to build something stable and that creates a culture. You can call it following the Steelers lead if you wish. Everyone in the organization believes Jason Garrett is the guy to do that because the players are 100% behind him and what he is trying to build here. No one in the NFL can overcome the type of injuries that have beset this team, the Packers, the Falcons, etc. In other words, our failures due to injuries are not unique. It happens when you have to use too many warm bodies instead of your best players.

Therefore, Jason Garrett is going to be here for a while as the Head Coach, and the success we all want is going to come, because the players have all bought in. We are drafting better. There is cohesion. They do not give up even when they are out manned. These are all good signs. I firmly believe we are going to beat the Eagles. I'd like to see the Packers beat the Bears so that we are the 3 seed in the playoffs. I don't care about being 9-7. I care about getting in, winning our Division instead of a team I hate, and then doing all we can to try and move on further. Do I think we are a Super Bowl contender? Not with this many injuries, but I want the playoffs, and I do believe we can win a game or two. Not saying we will, I believe we can. There is a difference.

If we do, the DFW media will then immediately try to manufacture a QB controversy in Dallas. It will go global and Jerry will be thrilled because people are talking about his team. Like they don't already. Did you see Inside the Huddle? Half the show was about Dallas losing Romo. The truth is there will be no controversy within the team.

I know the above will piss some people off, but it is the truth, not some wild fantasy fueled by frustrations and myths. Time to hate the Eagles if you are able to. If you are going to the game, be louder than you ever have been and encourage everyone around you to do the same. Go Cowboys!

Have we beat a team with a winning record in the last two seasons? This fat fuck knows nothing about the inner workings of the organization. I've yet to hear a team leader come out and fully support Ginger. They backed Witten into a corner and he dodged around the Ginger question at best recently. If Hos and his obese ass actually had some "valley ranch insider", why does he toil on shitty blogs indirectly begging Jerry for a job? His source would have told him years ago that his writing level equates to that of an autistic 6th grader and that he'll never be qualified to write for an organization worth over one hundred dollars, much less one billion.

I'm not guessing. What I told you is exactly what you should expect is going to unfold. I mean as far as the direction this team wants to go. There is no desire to start over anywhere on this team, except next year with the same core, and some new blood to help the depth and replace the dead.

I have decided to use this quote to answer that tired dogma every time it is shared ad nauseum.

"Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority." --Vince Lombardi

Forgive me for thinking Lombardi knew more about building a football team than Einstein.

And I'll add this, I can't stand Campo. Never could. But if he had the injuries we have had the last 2 years, I probably would think firing him was not fair. I don't believe Jimmy Johnson could win with this many critical players hurt

Have you ever noted how Landry's players revered him outside of football too? That is happening here. You can choose to ignore that if you wish.

Ya'll be good today. I need to go buy my patient and lovely bride a birthday gift. A flat screen TV with Internet capability for the bedroom sounds wonderful to me. After that I expect to get lucky, so I will be having a good day.

Go Cowboys.

Cuban answers his own questions regarding the litmus tests for whether Jason should be the current Dallas Cowboys head coach next season and/or seasons to come.

There is something fundamentally wrong with a lack of in game adjustment and especially, understanding game management and or strategy to not lose a game that you are set to win. The name of the game is winning. There have been 4 games in each of the last 3 seasons that were Jason's offense, his playcalling and especially his lack of game management that cost the Cowboys the win.

But let's look at the better litmus test that Cuban offers.

Upgrade? Yes. Right now there are several upgrades for the following flaws that are currently hurting the Cowboys chances to win every week.
Knowledge of the game? No evidence. There is no evidence that Jason knows anything more than the certain passing theories on the offense.
Respect of the players? Witten seems to be the only one left. Even Romo, after he signed his contract wanted more power to change the offense because it was not working. And after the Green Bay game, Garrett threw Romo under the tires of the big cheese bus.
Ability to adjust and learn. Zilch. Jason has not shown any ability to do that in the time he has been both OC and HC.

Yes, Mr Cuban, there is a huge fundamental flaw as a head coachwhen your team has a better chance of winning if you do not show up for the game.

I have not watched a network television show since the 3rd season of "Lost." I don't watch the news. I watch sports. That's what I enjoy the most, and I just don't have time for the rest.

You would be shocked at how many TV shows I have never seen. I miss The Andy Griffith Show, M*A*S*H, Barney Miller, Taxi, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and other old classics. Those I would watch again. I have friends who cannot believe I have never seen a single episode of The Simpsons. But it's true, I haven't, and have no desire to either.
