Someone still has to explain
To me why one of the worst right tackles in football was not an outright cut instead of a 3.5 million a year player

Well, it is only money, but damn, a 3.5 million pay cut can't be an easy one to take.

I'd be at Happy Hour tonight if I were him (and not feeling particularly happy).

Obviously it was a rational decision on his part to take the pay cut, but it still has got to sting a bit.

bkeavs ... if nothing else, Free is a good option as a backup swing tackle. He knows the system and has experience. I'm not excited about him either, but I do think he's better than someone else's JAG.

EDIT: Looks like I misread the info. His pay cut wasn't 3.5, that's what he's making now. Anyone know how much the pay cut was?

Amazing how these guys have absolutely no desire to improve this O-line.

The right decision was to cut this bum, then turn around and sign either Clabo or Winston. The fact that they didn't, and actually did want him to take a cut means that he was their #1 option all along.

Every last player on the line to the left of Tyron Smith is trash. Livings is decent, I guess, but the other 3 are totally worthless. But yet not a single attempt was made to truly replace any of them.

Pathetic.

that's actually not what it means I think.

What it means is we wanted to cut him, but it doesn't make sense to considering his salary. A salary which I wish people would remind themselves was reacted to OVERWHELMINGLY favorably to by Cowboys fans (if anyone wants to argue that point go find a thread where you condemned it at the time. I can find plenty where people were stoked). We thought we had our LT of the future, and the Eagles were hot for him.

Basically what happened here if my memory is correct is we told Free we were going to cut him unless he took a pay cut that would be commensurate with what it would cost us to cut him. That way we basically break even on the proposition, gain the cap space, and don't have another roster spot to fill.

This was the best possible option for all parties involved.

A less expensive turd is still a turd. I thought the goal was to get better, not cheaper.

Isn't everyone on the line to the right of the LT, hence the name Left Tackle?

@corryjoel: Doug Free might stick around in '14 w/a $3.5M salary. He counts $6.52M on the '14 cap & $7M in dead $$ unless given post-June 1 treatment.

No it wasn't. They should have fucking cut him.

They could have signed someone worth a shit to play RT for 3.5M that Free will make.

Whether or not people were in favor of the contract when he was playing well doesn't matter. He's been shit for 2 years and doesn't deserve to be paid that amount anymore.

There is no "break even". Had they cut him today they take a 10M cap hit this year which is what it would have been had he not restructured.

Wait until June 1st and then cut him and they take 3M in hits this year 7M next year. Odds are they won't use the entire 7M that would be opened up by cutting him after June 1st so any remaining money rolls over to next year and cancels out some of next years 7M hit.

Basically it comes down to how they want to account for 10M over the next two years. They ultimately could have taken the total hit this year, saved 7M and rolled whatever amount over. Roll over 7M and they don't have to worry about his dead money next year......just the same as taking all 10M this year by cutting him today.

Instead, they'll waste 3.5M more on him this year and then still have 7M to work out next year.

It's basically 10M over 2 years or 13.5M over 3 years. The only difference being that Doug Free fucking sucks and won't help the team if he plays like last year. 5M/season versus 4.5M/season if you average it out.

They should have cut his ass. If all they needed was a warm body to fill a roster spot, any one of us could have been that guy.

I'll take a shot..in Jerry's deluded mind they're always one player away from a Super Bowl, so he's too scared to make a tough cut and end up having to look back when they don't and wonder if it was the reason why

While unlikely- if Free would play like he did in 2009 and 2010, this would be fine

Still am not convinced he is a starter on opening day though.

You cut him you take the penalty plus the salary of the new shitty player we'd have to pay to replace him and probably do his job nearly as bad as he does.
