OG Nate Livings scheduled to visit Cowboys

March, 14, 2012
By Todd Archer

IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys might not be done addressing the interior of their offensive line with Cincinnati guard Nate Livings expected to visit with the team, according to multiple sources.

Livings, who turns 30 later this month, has started every game the last two years at left guard for the Bengals and has made 47 starts in the last four years. At 6-foot-5, 332 pounds, Livings has the size the Cowboys seem to want to plug the interior of the line.

Earlier Wednesday, the Cowboys signed 6-foot-4, 308-pound offensive guard Mackenzy Bernadeau to a four-year deal with what has been described as “starter’s” money.

Kyle Kosier, a starter since arriving in 2006 in free agency, is under contract, but he suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in the season finale against the New York Giants. He is scheduled to make $2.25 million in 2012 after hitting a playing-time escalator in his contract.

The Cowboys used Bill Nagy, Montrae Holland and Derrick Dockery as starters at left guard last year. Nagy’s season was cut short by an ankle injury. Holland and Dockery are veteran free agents. The team also drafted David Arkin in the fourth round last year, but he did not play a snap.

It is possible Kosier could move to center and compete with Phil Costa, who started every game at center in 2011

Now this would be a solid signing, just not would I expected.

I'm all for improving this OL, but I hope they still draft DeCastro even if they sign Livings.

Also not sure if this "bernadette" signing will help us at all.

Wait... we signed MacKenzy for starters money?

And we're bringing this guy in?

Well, we're not drafting DeCastro. That much is certain.

Don't know how I feel about that.

If this guy is signed, I'm thinking it might be something more like a 1 or 2 yr deal with a chance to compete for a starting job. I would think getting him wouldnt prevent them from taking a long look at DeCastro if he were available.

I'm worried about that too. It looks like we're going LB, DE, DT with pick 14 and maybe addressing guard or center again later in the draft.

As long as it's Fletcher Cox or Dontari Poe I'm on board. My gut feeling though is we take Barron. Which would suck.

Nate Livings started 16 games last season for the Bengals. He's 6-5, 332 pounds.

Cowboys OL coach Bill Callahan and Wes Phillips had breakfast with G Nate Livings this morning according to coach Jason Garrett.

Seriously. I have bitched and moaned about plenty of Cowboy signings/draft picks but on a talent level, this is right up there with Shante Carver and Quincy Carter. This guy can not play.

Disappointing. I either liked or could rationalize every other signing. This one is baffling.

Courtesy of AdamJT:

Livings turned 30 today.

The good news is that he's never had more than two false starts or allowed more than two sacks in any season. He also didn't miss a single snap last season.

ESPN Insider:

Expert's Take

Livings has good size and strength but is adequate athletically. He uses active hands and a good initial punch to stymie defenders at the line of scrimmage. He has good strength to anchor well against powerful bullrushers but can struggle with smaller, quicker interior defenders. Livings is solid when reacting to stunts and twists on the inside. He understands angles and pad leverage to gain an advantage on combination blocks but is inconsistent to stay connected on the second level.

And by the way, Green was a Parcells pick, Stanback was an Ireland pick

So, do you guys think we're done in free agency?

We stil need a tight end with good blocking skills, center, maybe a third receiver, safety, defensive end, defensive tackle if Ratliff is moved to end.

I know we have the draft and can't fill all our holes in one off season.

And it's the same group of guys, throw in all the misses from 09 on alone on the line and in the secondary..

Ciskowski was right there with ireland.....someone keeps on taking the brewsters, hodges, James marten's, aoa, stanbacks, courtney brown, dangelo smith, mike mickens, jason wiliiams, brandon williams, sam young, mike hamlin, jammar wall..etc.....only Ireland and gaine have left in all this time....

Nd yes dbair I know parcells took skyler green...
