Garrett says Cowboys had 'huge discussion' before they drafted converted safety J.J. Wilcox: 'Can he do this?'

As the Cowboys had a chance to draft safety J.J. Wilcox, they thought to themselves: Should we do this?

“We drafted a guy in the third round who was a running back all until last year in college,” coach Jason Garrett said. “That was a huge discussion we had before we drafted him – can he really do this, can he really make this transition?”

The Cowboys decided to bet on it, and Wilcox – an offensive-turned-defensive player at Georgia Southern – is making the third-round pick look like a good investment. He has gotten the Cowboys’ attention with his hitting and aggressiveness. This week, he took first-team snaps when starter Barry Church had to have tooth surgery.

“At all turns, he seems to be a really aware football player,” Garrett said. “He’s learninig. He’s got physical traits both to defend the run and play the back end. He’s the kind of guy you like to coach because he loves football and plays hard.”

Wilcox remembers the adjustment. He had to go from running back to safety, erasing three years of offensive habits.

“Looking at it from a defensive perspective, that was the biggest adjustment for me,” he said. “I had to stay extra.
Film room, I was in there before the coaches and after the coaches, just trying to catch up, being a senior defensive back, trying to get drafted and noticed by NFL scouts. So I had to put in a lot of extra work. And my teammates and coach back in college did a great job with that.”

another midtwat prediction about to go down the shitter

Please link to all of my predictions that have been wrong.

I mean, have I been wrong on things? Sure. But a significant amount of the time? No.

Especially compared to a huge homer like yourself. A homer of a team that has been mediocre at best for the past almost 20 years.

Logic would suggest you'd have as bad a track record as anyone out there, based solely off the team not being able to back up your annual high hopes.

I like Wilcox right now. Didn't like the pick at all. But sounds like he's doing well early.

Only problem I have, is that it appears he plays Church's spot. I'd like him a lot more if he could play next to Church and unseat Allen and white boy. Doesn't sound like that's the plan.

Seems like he and church are our 2 best safeties, I would like for them to play together

The only positives you hear from Wilcox is he's a hitter.

That's super exciting in practice and all.... but it'll lead to a lot of unneccessary roughness penalties during real games. The NFL is sissified now.

Not true. I've heard he's very smart. Knows all of his assignments. Zero, mark that, ZERO blown assignments thus far. And he's a hard worker.

It's early. I know not saying he's even good. But we can only grade him on what his performance to date...and so far he's far exceeded just about anyone's expectations.

I hope all thats true. I'd love to be wrong about the guy. Last competent safety we had (minus 1 year of Ken Hamlin) was what... 2003?

10 fucking years. Hamlin in 2007.

We need to get that position fixed.

Just seems like all everyone says about Wilcox is he's a hitter. No more Chuck Cecils in the NFL last I checked.

Oh ... I think you are saying that you think he's at least a little good.

You can't kid a kidder.

That's against our offensive scheme that he's had quite a few weeks to prepare for.

Starting in September, he's going to have to learn a new offense every week.

I'm not saying he's going to be a bust. Just don't expect him to contribute other than on special teams for a few weeks.

Well, yeah. Recently rookies have been coming in and producing right away. People have changed their expectations of when a rookie should be contributing. Very few rookies can live up to this.

No. I don't think he's good bc we haven't played any games. I think he's better than I thought he was.

He isn't going to start anyways. So it doesn't matter. Church isn't losing his spot. Now church on the other hand, I do think is good. I like him

So you think he's better than you thought he was but you still don't think he's any good?

Not even a little good?

(I'm just joking around. No worries.)
