Signing Cap Casualties Also A Possibility

Posted by jellis at 2/16/2012 2:51 PM CST on dallascowboys.com

An inevitability each offseason is that quite a few players around the league will be let go when their production isn't meeting their paycheck. Oakland cornerback Stanford Routt met that fate just last week.

For the Cowboys, the most widely recognized candidate to be sent packing is cornerback Terence Newman, who is still working out at the team facility. Indeed, Newman is among the players listed as potential cap casualties in a story by Jason La Canfora over on NFL.com, the Santa María to our Pinta.

In the last few weeks, a ton of words have been devoted here to potential free agent signings, but many of those candidates will be franchised or reach extensions with their current teams before the Cowboys ever have a shot to get at them. However, the free agent field will be supplemented by a number of veterans who aren't living up to expectations elsewhere.

Might any of them be a fit with the Cowboys?

Among the players La Canfora rattles off who would have to be considered are Oakland safety Michael Huff, an Irving, Texas guy who was widely-discussed as a potential signee last summer, and is due $4 million by March 16.

The Raiders are staring cap hell in the face, and could also decide to cut bait with defensive lineman Tommy Kelly and outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, either of whom could make sense for the Cowboys. Kelly was a Rob Ryan favorite, and Wimbley played a year for the Cowboys coordinator in Cleveland before the Browns traded him to Oakland in 2010.

Minnesota veteran DBs Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin might be considerations for the Cowboys if the Vikings decide not to field either of their bonuses. And Minnesota guard Steve Hutchinson, who is due almost $7 million in base salary) doesn't jive with the Cowboys' plans to get younger on the offensive line, but would represent an upgrade.

Elsewhere, the receiver-rich Packers may choose to jettison Donald Driver, who could be reunited with position coach Jimmy Robinson if the Cowboys can't bring back Laurent Robinson.

Cya laurent. Good luck w/ Alex smith

Were being linked to so many raiders the last 2 years. I thought the point of rob ryan was he never had a ton of talent to work with before us?

You know who I'd consider on a cheap deal? Eddie Royal.

The guy only had like 20 catches for 150 yards or something, but he had an outstanding rookie year and is valuable in the return game.

I think in the right scheme he could flourish. He's only 25

I love Eddie Royal. Ideal slot receiver. Good return man.

I'd prefer Joe Adams. But if Eddie Royal can be had, I'd be a big fan.

His last three years were 19/155/1, 59/627/3, and 37/345/0. I can't imagine he'd get a very big contract.

I don't think Dallas would look at him anyway. They seem to prefer bigger receivers.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him reunite with Shanahan in Washington or go to the Patriots.

You would get rid of Laurent for a guy who has maybe a year or two in the tank?

It's not like Driver would be a starter. We're talking 3rd string and you want to ditch a guy who was productive for a big name who has taken a back seat over the last couple of seasons?

Yes, I dont feel like out-biding SF, Seattle. Stl etc. for a #3 WR. Remember their desperation, they might be willing to give him #2 WR money. Id rather have Driver or the next best released vet on a 1 year deal than commit to a 3 WR for years.

Jimmy Robinson loves Donald and has already brought this up in offseason prep meetings. If it all lines up both parties are interested

If nothing else maybe some intangibles rubs off on Dez and Dwayne Harris, and no progress is stopped

People are overrating the Laurent/romo chemistry. Romo can scramble for 7 seconds and find anyone.

At this stage of their careers, trading Robinson for a guy like Driver would be a downgrade, and a pretty significant one. He just turned 37 and has definitely lost alot of quickness over the past 2-3 seasons.

He's a guy who probably needs to retire.

Robinson is not or should not be a priority. There are other options.

And my pet cat, Dwayne Harris is on the team.

Also, the coaches love Radway.

Unless the price tag is crazy, he is absolutely a priority. Austin cant stay healthy enough and beyond him and Dez, Robinson is by far the best WR remaining on our team.

Usually priorities are givin top dollar, or they wouldn't be considered priorities.

Get rid of the cancer Dez, and sign Robinson. He's worth the money and Dez is not.

Maybe Donald Driver could communicate Jimmy Robinson's message better to Dez and serve as some type of mentor to him ala Chris Carter mentoring Randy Moss when he 1st came into the league. While becoming a reliable target for Romo on 3rd downs. He can't be any slower than Patrick Crayton was.

The big plays at WR should come from Dez and Austin. So I think we'd be alright moving on from Robinson and going with Driver instead.
