The Cowboys told Andy Dalton they expect to set up a private workout with him soon. The TCU quarterback worked out for 26 teams, including the Cowboys, at his school's Pro Day on Friday. Dallas scouts Walter Juliff and Chris Hall both were at the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility.

It's no surprise the Cowboys have an interest in Dalton. A source in the front office said during the season that the Cowboys liked Dalton, who was 42-7 in his four-year career as a Horned Frog.

The Cowboys drafted Stephen McGee in the fourth round of the 2009 draft. They still are uncertain about exactly what they have in McGee, though the former Texas A&M star got to play in the final two regular-season games and showed some moxie. In one relief appearance and one start, McGee completed 22 of 44 passes for 238 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He was at his best late in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Cardinals and a victory over the Eagles.

Backup Jon Kitna played well in Tony Romo's absence last season, but Kitna will be 39 years old in September. So it's possible the Cowboys could be looking to the future with McGee and a rookie as Romo's backups next season. (Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy's father works for the Cowboys, and the Cowboys are a big fan of Greg McElroy's as well.)

Dalton, who could be drafted as high as the second round, already has private workouts scheduled with the Browns, the Patriots and the Bears beginning next week. He drew 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, Panthers quarterbacks coach Mike Shula, Jacksonville offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden to his workout Friday.

"I've been telling everybody, and this is true," said Jerry Rhome, a private quarterback coach who has been tutoring Dalton, "he is going to be still around and playing 12, 13 years from now. That's what I see. When you're looking for a quarterback, you're looking for a guy who can play 12, 13 years. Not just some flash in the pan. He's going to have longevity."

Pick one....

Romo, Kitna, McGee

or

Romo, McGee, Dalton

Now keep in mind, if you choose to add Dalton, that means you are using a 3rd or 4th round pick in this draft. Costing you a player at another position, if you were to choose the first option.

LOL. I want Romo, Kitna, and Dalton. But yeah, I'll stick with the first option. Maybe we get lucky and get another UFDA QB, and kick McGee to the curb.

Damn it.

I'm already on record saying I don't think McGee is the guy.

I really like Dalton,too.

But,whatever position someone thinks we need to draft,it's undeniable we need talented depth across the board.

QB should be addressed, just not this year, with Laz's proviso, maybe Romo II walks into camp, whenever that is.

So;Romo,Kitna,McGee.

I'd prefer Romo, Kitna, Dalton too.....but that's not happening. It's take another year or two for the "GM" to realize Stephen McGee can't play.

Both McGee and Kitna are career backups. We should keep the cheaper, younger one and continue to draft for the next franchise QB. Kitna has zero upside to make me want to keep him around.

If I thought McGee stood a better chance than Kitna of winning a game or two next year if he had to play, I'd keep McGee.

I'd be in favor of dropping McGee and adding a young arm with some upside.

I think you still need Kitna, you can count on him to win more than he loses if Romo goes down. McGee is a jag.

McGee is not the answer. He is a dime a dozen clipboard carrying backup QB.

I would not mind selecting Dalton if we somehow garnered another 3rd or 4th by trading back in the first. No way do I spend a high 2nd on him.

Being that you are an Aggie fan, I'd say that your judgement is clouded. If McGee had c0me in, instead of Kitna, we would have won those games in the second ahlf of the season. McGee SUCKS. PERIOD.

Romo, McGee, Dalton.

Especially if you know Dalton is your future starter.

God forbid if Romo is injured again then we could always sign Kitna back.

I'm sure at his age he knows his starting days are all but over and he won't be signed anywheres else to start.

But if we had to, I think McGee would do fine in a back up role if we needed him too.

You are a moron, I've never picked an Aggie over anyone because of school ties. Kitna wins those games because he has experience over McGee and nothing else. Kitna is also owed $2.2m to McGee's $500k. You talk by about throwing the old guys out yet you want to keep a 38 yr old QB. Kitna is going down hill fast, the next time he sees any action he will not be the same guy.

No one thinks he is "The Answer" but there is no question that he is at least as good as Kitna and fits into the backup roll. No point in throwing him out when Kitna is so close to retirement.

I don't agree that McGee is as good as Kitna. Kitna at least can challenge teams down the field some. Checkdown McGee still looks overwhelmed reading pro defenses.

Kitna's got the experience you'd want to fill in for a game or two. He could hit the wall at any point. That's true. Maybe that will happen this year, but I'd still roll the dice with him as the backup to Romo while getting another developmental QB to groom in the 3rd spot.

I'm just not a McGee guy. I see no upside in him.

Remember one thing about McGee's win last year.

He was playing against a disinterested Eagles team playing their backups.
