Cowboys coordinator Bill Callahan works to put together “a run game plan we can all be proud of”

Bill Callahan took his turn Thursday to address the Cowboys aversion to the run in the first two games of the season.
Balance is not a 50-50 proposition. The offensive coordinator made it clear the Cowboys want to take advantage of mismatches and defenses in whatever form they are vulnerable to attack.
That being said, he acknowledged, like head coach Jason Garrett and Tony Romo, that the Cowboys must run the ball more.
“We’re working diligently to that end of putting together a run game and putting together our players and fitting the chemistry and then definitely calling it and getting it executed on the field,’’ Callahan said. “We’ve got to do a better job. I’ve got to do better job calling more runs. That’s something we’re working hard on.’’
The Cowboys have attempted to throw the ball 97 times in the first two games compared to 34 run plays. The team ran the ball 16 times for 37 yards in the loss to Kansas City.
“I think by and large it’s circumstantial,’’ Callahan said. “We just took advantage of some opportunities that existed and we went after coverage and obviously some matchups that we liked.
“It’s not that we didn’t want to run it, it’s just that during the course of the game you’re going to go ahead and attack a defense in a certain way in a certain manner.’’
And what about finishing the game with 19 consecutive pass plays even though the Cowboys were within one to four points the whole time?
“We’re tracking it and we’re looking at it closely,’’ Callahan said of that trend as it unfolded. “And again, we just felt that there were some real matchups that we liked in that game and we want to go attack. And that’s the way it played out.
“When it doesn’t play out, that’s a part of the job and I shoulder that. I don’t shun that responsibility whatsoever but going forward we’re trying to try to put together a run game plan we can all be proud of and we can like and hopefully get to that balance that we’re looking for.’’
