Cowboys can release players starting today
February, 7, 2011

By Calvin Watkins

The business of the NFL never stops, and today is the first time teams can start releasing players.

The collective bargaining agreement expires March 3 and, if no agreement is reached, league business stops. If the Cowboys or any other team doesn't want a player, the clock is ticking to get it done.

A team source didn't expect any roster moves coming today.

Players can also get franchised, according to the league. But union officials said teams can't do that, so there remains a dispute.

The Cowboys have 13 free agents, and it hasn't been determined who is unrestricted and restricted.

The unlucky or lucky 13 are: Alan Ball, Alex Barron, Stephen Bowen, Doug Free, Chris Greisen, Jason Hatcher, Jesse Holley, Sam Hurd, Kyle Kosier, Bryan McCann, Gerald Sensabaugh, Marcus Spears and Leon Williams.

Now there are a few players who could be on the chopping block for any number of reasons, whether it's production or a cost-cutting move.

Those players are: Marion Barber, Roy Williams, David Buehler, Marc Colombo, Andre Gurode, Leonard Davis, Keith Brooking, Terence Newman and Igor Olshansky.

There will be more than 400 free agents, for now, unless something changes within the rules of a new CBA that would lower that number.

The Cowboys have some hard decisons. They also have the ninth pick of the NFL draft, which also could affect who could remain on the roster.

I don't even want him under either of those scenarios.

He's not worth a shat anymore.

I think the guys in bold are all goners.

Not sure why bone head thinks they'd release Buehler after just 1yr here. He wasnt terrible and he certainly has alot of upside. t the very least he should be in camp competing for his job.

Also dont see any way in hell they cut Gurode. Spears will be interesting, he might be a good fit for Ryan's scheme and he was underrated as a player IMO. I think Bowen stays, but Htacher is gone.

Kosier and Davis are gonna be interesting too. Kosier is a free agent and really isnt that physical, plus he's getting ol. Davis was mediocre last yr and makes too much money, but expecting to replace 3 starters on the OL in one offseason might be unrealistic.

I don't get the releasing of Gurode either.

Try to replace as many offensive linemen as you can.

Then replace the rest next year.

I'd rush to the NFL office with Marion Barber's card like if Von Miller fell into our lap at #9 in the draft.

Only a buffoon would think Doug Free needs to be "replaced"

The other 4, yeah they need to be upgraded within the next two seasons.

Only a mindless homer mascot would want to settle for a marginal player like Doug Free as their franchise LT of the future.

Replace all 5. They're not good enough.

You are almost unreadable at this point. How do you live in this world where nothing lives up to this high standard you've set. Something tells me that you are nowhere near the high standard you seemingly put on everyone else.

I don't care what something tells you. Means nothing to me.

There are certain positions on a football team where I don't think you should settle. And one most certainly is LT.

Doug Free on his best day is a JAG. He's not, and never will be, a blue chip player. So he's not good enough for me as the future at that position. It'd be like settling for Jon Kitna as your franchise QB.

Now I know he's the chubby girl hanging around the fat chicks right now. He looks good in comparison to trash. But that's not a reason to add another horrible contract on an overrated player.

As a bandaid for a year or two until you can find someone with talent? Sure.

As my franchise LT for the forseeable future? Never.

Get to work Cowboys.

I still don't feel that Williams should be gone yet. Maybe they can find someone in free agency ,but, if Dez or Austin go down? They are screwed. Seen it happen before.,

Everybody that ranks players based on their actual play seems to disagree with you.

Is he Anthony Munoz? Nope. Is he pretty good, yep.

They need to cut Colombo and Davis. Both are going to be 33 years old and they are not getting any better. You cannot justify keeping Davis around with his sub-par play and his overbloated contract. It is not unrealistic to replace 3 starters on THIS OLine. Consider the REALITY of what happened with this Oline this past season and how we lost Romo mas a result. If either Jerry and Garrett are serious about rebounding from this abysmal season, they have to get rid of much of the Oline. Kosier would be better served as a backup if we were to re-sign him, he will also be 33 years old and he's been injured. I do not see that changing.

And Gurode needs to be moved to either guard position. I am fucking tired of seeing balls sail up high over Romo's head. When are they going to figure it out that one day that Romo is going to get seriously injured from that shit. I'm tired of this asshole leading the league in penlties among centers, because he doesn't know the damn snap count, so either he ends up false starting or causing the rest of the Oline to false start. He's the only Center in the league that does not make the line calls. Kosier does that because HE'S TOO FUCKING STUPID. I don't get it. We had Stepnoski and Ray Donaldson (who was also a raod grader like Gurode but highly intelligent) and now we are settling for this? If he doesn't want to move to guard then trade him. Hey. He's a Pro Bowl center (whatever), somebody might be willing to give up something for him. Personally, I'd rather see Costa get a shot. I was disappointed that they did not get rid of Houck but they at least are showing they are trying to bring in somebody to "assist". They damn well need to get rid of the personnel.

The question is, how do you justify keeping Colombo and Davis and Gurode at Center? Are any of them going to get markedly better during the offseason?

Well we are screwed either way, so why keep Williams? He's an overpaid, delusuional, narcisisistic malcontant #3 WR at best. This fucker is worse than T.O. At least T.O. produced.

I'd definitely cut ties with Colombo and Davis, and find their replacements this year, then fix the rest of the offensive line the following year.

This can't be fixed in one off season. If and when we are allowed to do so, I'd sign free agent Logan Mankins, and draft a RT later in the first.

If we don't get what we are looking for at 9, we need to move out of that spot then grab extra picks and select a guy like Carimi to play RT

Right there you have corrected two of the five offensive lineman. I think Free, Koiser, Gurode, Mankins, and Carimi would be an upgrade.

Maybe even move Kosier to right guard and place Mankins to the left guard position.
