This is a lottery ticket, and lotteries are for suckers.
Even when you play the lottery, you don't pay more than the price of the ticket.
We gave up a 4th for a player who apparently needs a year or two "to learn" and he only has 2 years on this contract (unless someone thinks that we will franchise him).
So even if Lance gets in games and does a Matt Flynn, there's a good chance he will sign with another team.
Meanwhile, we could have hung on to that 4th round pick and used it on a QB in the 4th who could be with us for 4 years, or at the very least also be a QB with a 55 completion percentage.
I don't care what anyone says, Mike White is a decent QB. Nice arm, decent mobility, etc. We didn't hit big time on Mike White, but we gave up on him too soon.
The point is that this idea that a decent QB (if you're looking for a backup) can't be found in rounds 3 to 5 is hogwash. You just need to be willing to pull the trigger.
Trey Lance for 2 years or Aidan O'Connell for 4?
Stetson Bennett went a pick before us, but a small trade-up (assuming there was a taker) could have landed Bennett.
I know, I know, Bennett isn't this or that. Guess what, neither is Lance.
If I'm going to give up a 4th round pick, for a player who will be on the team for 2 years, I want a player who can play NOW. Like Amari Cooper. Of course, we gave up a 1 for Cooper and then got a 6th.
But the Giants gave up a 3 for Waller. Waller will play now for them. They gave up a 6th or 7th for Isaiah Simmons, Simmons will play now for them.
So what is the point of giving up a 4th for a 3rd stringer? I know, I know, we will develop him for 2 years. If we develop him for 2 years and he shows it on the field, he'll either leave for the big bucks or we'll need to franchise him based on a small sample size.
But, of course, a decision of Dak needs to be made much sooner than 2 years.
I think this trade is stupid!
