Romo has said numerous times his favorite formation to throw from is 5 wide with an empty set

His QB rating this yr from that formation has to be off the charts...Ron Jaworski studied and charted every play they ran from the formation (this was up to the win vs Philly) and the numbers were huge

Seems pretty lame to me to continue complaining about the offense when the QB had a career yr, the RB set all kinds of single season records, the WR had another banner yr, the TE had another good yr and supporting players in the offense all produced when needed

I don't agree. With a seasons worth of film, that money play/formation eventually is read and adjusted for by better teams.

It didn't work in the Detroit game and it cost them in the GB game. 6 and 4 sacks respectively, with a lot of them coming on plays when merely 2 - 6 yards were needed. 4-2 wouldn't have been necessary if they didn't pull Murray on 2nd down.

I'm not complaining at all. The less he does, the better.

And I notice dbair didn't answer the question...

Do I need to run down the coaches who don't have much of anything to do with the offense or defense?

Two off the top of my head are John Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin. Pretty highly regarded guys and neither really has any impact on either side of the ball (at least by your reasoning). Harbaugh was a ST guy, Tomlin was a 4-3 defensive guy before he got to Pittsburgh.

What's Tom Coughlin do in NY anymore? What about Fox in Denver? (gone obviously)

If Murray is in there he is another receiving threat they have to account for, or a extra blocker. (Or both.) Also a draw play threat at all times.

That's my point and I'm a schlub on his couch. At least make the defense guess. It's a frigging free-for-all sprint to Romo on these plays.

Probably half those sacks came on plays where Romo held the ball too long...some of them he wasn't even in the shotgun, let alone the empty backfield.

The Philly game was in week 13...We ate the Colts alive and blew out Washington...what adjustments are you talking about? Two of the biggest plays in the Detroit game came out of that 5 WR empty backfield set...Romo completed almost all his throws vs GB so how did they stop it? I guess you could say they stopped it on the play to Dez Bryant that was overturned by the officials

But really - dbair: I like your posts you make some really good points and do pretty good analysis at times, but when we hold GB to almost half its home points output, we should win the frikkin ballgame. We're talking 5 lousy points here. The offense sputtered for at least a full quarter.

We let 'em take Dez out anytime they want, and are slow to adjust to it. Surely you understand that?

which apparently doesn't happen often, because his QB rating had to be somewhere around 130 or so in that formation...after the Philly game (win) Jaworski said the numbers were 45 completions in 60 drop backs with 6 or 7 tds and only 1 pick...Romo only threw one pick the rest of the yr (Wash game, and I don't remember the formation but I do remember the play, and it wasn't picked because of the formation)...Romo's numbers after the Philly game were pretty staggering, and this was the best season of his career

Again, I don't get the complaining

Some of you guys should be offensive coordinators. Youd be making millions of dollars with all your offensive knowledge. /sarcasmLaz

3 TDs out of ten possessions? That what you're saying?

That makes it sound like they stopped us 70 percent of the time and stuff.

Points win the games, not the ratings.

and they would have scored more points if not for blocked FG, Murray's fumble and play that doesn't need to be discussed anymore

we punted twice the entire game...I give Peppers a lot of credit for stopping the first drive (Murray was wide open for an easy conversion when Peppers hit Romo) and Peppers made the great play to force the fumble on Murray.

I think there are some legitimate nits to pick on offensive play calling...

But I'm just thinking back on how bad the playcalling was when Garrett was doing it. We saw a marked improvement in ONE YEAR. Give Linehan another offseason to get some things ironed out, and bring back the same offense, and we should get better.

If Garrett was going to resign -- and it was an inevitability after Jerry didn't fire him after 2012 or 2013 and we went 12-4 this year -- then this is the best case scenario. Bring back the coordinators who can overcome his obvious deficiencies.

Colts, you have a point Washington... I said the better teams.
If memory serves, second and goal from the two against Detroit. Nada. Granted on 3rd down Murray was stopped, and had to run wide to get it in on fourth and goal from the 2, but this formation on short yardage is over-used and an unnecessary gamble.. And 2 of the biggest plays out of a game of how many plays? I'm not against the formation, I'm against the over use of it, especially when you need 2 yards and have the leagues leading rusher.

It was 3 out of 8 for the game dude.

Again. Blocked FG, bad fumble by Murray and pretty lame overturn of Dez amazing catch.

Two punts, entire game.

I don't know what % constitutes overuse of it. I don't see us using it any more or less than other teams...but the numbers out of that formation this year are pretty overwhelming

dbair you have to agree that the offense can do more.

they'd have done more this past week...but...blocked FG...fumble by Murray when it appeared he might go all the way and Dez play

How much more could they reasonably do? We had one of the highest scoring teams in football...we had a team which possessed the ball longer every week more than all but one team...massive yrs from the QB and RB.

This was the first year of Linehan running it, we have an incredibly young OL that's only going to get better...I could see continued improvement next yr if the key guys stay healthy
