Cover 3?

Campo Expects More Corners On Roster

Josh Ellis
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

IRVING, Texas - Though they did their homework on other potential secondary coaches over the last few weeks, the Cowboys decided to stick with Dave Campo.

He and assistant secondary/safeties coach Brett Maxie are the only holdovers on a defensive staff that will look much different from a year ago, in terms of both personnel and scheme. While new coordinator Rob Ryan runs a 3-4 defense just as Wade Phillips did before him, some of their philosophies aren't the same.

Campo said one change he expects in 2011 is more manpower at the cornerback position. Going into last season, the team kept only Terence Newman, Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick, which left them in a bad way when Newman and Jenkins were banged up. The team later moved Bryan McCann up from the practice squad, but the unit essentially played shorthanded for half the year.

"I've never gone into a season with three corners active - only three guys," Campo said. "Now, we did have Alan Ball able to be the fourth corner. We certainly looked at it that way. But you're changing two positions when that happens. So I think that's something that will have to be addressed, for sure."

Campo said he thought some of Jenkins' struggles last season involved the midseason switch to Paul Pasqualoni as defensive coordinator, while Newman's play was affected by a rib injury. He thinks Ryan's defense can help both return to their 2009 form, but expects the team to try to build extra depth.

"I think that's something that will be determined by Jason and Rob and how they want to work that situation," Campo said. "Especially at the corner position, we were bare bones, no question about it."

Obviously the Cowboys viewed some of their safeties as cornerback depth or they wouldn't have only kept three.

I'm not worried about it. Like it didn't matter last year, it won't matter this year. Focus your attention on what can win or lose a game for you.

We didn't carry 3 corners. We simply had 3 listed on the depth chart. Look at the DB total and use your brain. No team enters a season with only 3 players they feel can play cornerback.

Our 4th corner was listed at S.

They need to start putting out rosters for dummies. Do you actually think the Cowboys didn't consider one of their corners getting hurt in the game and having a backup ready to go? Of course they did.

The plan was never to move Ball back to cb in case of injury. It was something fans just concocted in their own minds.

Again, no team would enter a season with three players they thought could play cornerback in a game.

It's idiotic asinine thinking from Joe fans.

We did.

They had no viable alternative to sub Newman in case he got hurt, and he did.

They had noone to create competition to keep Jenkins in line.

The only thing assinine is going into the season having your starting FS be plan B at cornerback and only having an undrafted rookie as a sub.

We did, unless you count the fans' idea that Ball would move to Cb in case of injury, which never happened.

Yes. The Cowboys lacked the foresight to think...hey, maybe one of our cornerbacks will get hurt in a game....so let's have absolutely no option should that happen.

Again. Rosters for dummies. An educated fan takes one look at those numbers and correctly assumes the Cowboys saw their 4th CB listed at S.

Not maybe. Not possibly. Definitely.
