If you speculate that Bruce Carter's selection in the second round could signal that veteran Keith Brooking is on his way out, you are way off base.

The Cowboys took Carter to develop behind Brooking and Bradie James. He will not be forced into the lineup although the club expects him to be a part of the rotation and contribute on special teams.

"One of the reasons we took him was because with Keith coming back, this will give him the time to get in and learn,'' owner Jerry Jones said. "He will be on special teams right away then come on. He'll play a lot.

"If he didn't have this knee injury, we think he would have gone in the first and that is pretty much the consensus around the league. But we've got a luxury because we have Brooking right now.''

Jones said the club will limit Carter in two-a-days but is confident he will be able to get on the field "sometime early.'' He really likes the young duo of Sean Lee and Carter at inside linebacker going forward.

"With his speed and pass coverage inside with Sean, it will be a unique combination in the future,'' Jones said.

The speed aspect is nice but I swear we have the lightest 3-4 interior in the league. I think teams will continue to run through us.

That's a worry. It's why I wanted Akeem Dent and didn't pay much attention to Carter.

Still, Bruce Carter is just death by natural causes away from starting.

Lee was supposed to be the back-up at SILB (James) with wonder pick Jason Williams being the back-up at WILB (Brooking). So maybe they are keeping Lee at SILB. The problem for me is that I see both Lee and Bruce Carter as WILB's.

He's closer to 6'1" 240 which is fine for a weakside 4-3 OLB. I want my ILB's big and my NT's huge in a 3-4.

He's not 6'1". Various places list him at 6'2 or 6'3.. but nowhere is he listed at 6'1.

He was 241 lbs at the combine.. if you don't think he's gained muscle since then you are silly.

I like Bruce Carter. He's is a talented linebacker. But somewhere in the 3-4 you have to have ILB's who can take on guards and centers occasionally. In a 4-3 the linebackers usually have 2 big tackles and 4 total d linemen in front of them. In a 3-4, the ILB's are not covered. The interior offensive linemen have straight shots at them.
