Brian Orakpo: This year we won’t have that Albert Haynesworth nonsense

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 26, 2011, 3:41 PM EDT

A year ago, the dominant story coming out of Redskins camp was the constant feuding between coach Mike Shanahan and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, who failed repeated attempts to pass Shanahan’s mandatory conditioning test.

This year, Haynesworth’s teammate Brian Orakpo says that won’t be an issue.

“This year, we’re not going through all that Albert nonsense,” Orakpo said, via Ryan O’Halloran of CSNwashington.com. “I don’t want to discuss it. I love Albert to death, wish him the best. If he’s here, there’s a role; if he’s not, we have to move on and forget about the saga with Albert, [Donovan] McNabb, you name it. We just have to start winning ballgames and forget about all the drama we go through each and every year.”

At the moment, however, it appears that Haynesworth will be with the Redskins in camp. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan wants to hold on to Haynesworth until the Redskins get what they want in a trade, and that could be a while.

Orakpo hopes that doesn’t mean another year of distractions.

“It wears you down; we try to say it don’t,” Orakpo said. “We want to focus on the team. I thought last year and the previous year, we talked too much about individuals that were having problems with the organization instead of trying to go out there and perform well. We need to forget about the nonsense and negativity.”

Play football. Stop making excuses.

For real that dude is always whinning over there about disrespect this and that....I guess he thinks he's TSuggs, Ware or Clay Matthews.

He isn't anywhere near as athletic as those cats so he needs to just shut it.

All those guys you named can play the run IN SPACE, and can cover when needed. They are versatile in their pass rushing. Orakpo, is just another overhyped Redskins' player.

I can't believe he's already 28. Either way, with Haynesworth gone, that's just less deflecting from the fact that the Redskins are just a bad football team.

btw, if one distraction wears your team down, then you have much bigger, all-encompassing issues than that one player. Shows a huge lack of mental fortitude as a team. So yeah.

He's 24, and I guess this year we'll find out if he's elite or not with hopefully someone on the other side of him worth taking up a blocker. Having watched him more than anyone here he is as athletic as they come (The only thing the combine is good for is measuring athleticism and his results were pretty good) but he's not exactly assignment sound when it comes to misdirection runs and pass plays. Wether that will come or not remains to be seen, but I don't see where he was using the distractions as an excuse. All he was saying is they need to get rid of them.

Saying the situation "wore them down" sounds like an excuse.

Btw, he's gonna be 25 soon.

His team came in last place and he whined and b.itched about not being in the top 10 for pass rushers. As for his athleticism, there is combine athleticism, and then there is game play athleticism. His combine athleticism is a non-factor when it comes for him playing the run in space or in coverage.

And it wasn't like he was getting double-teamed, so I don't get what you are saying that having someone opposite side of him will take up one less blocker for him. Are you sayign that other person opposite of him will be getting double-teamed?

Apparently you've watched more Redskins games than me. I applaud your dilligence.

I've watched plenty. I keep up with tioher NFC East teams you know. That's been one of Orakpo's knocks against him is that he is not that great against the run or in coverage, and I've seen it as well as others. That's why he will not become a complete player as an OLB but rather just a decent pass rusher. He's one-dimensional.

Sorry Banger but I've watched ever game that any NFC East team has played for the past 4 years (Thank you DTV SuperFan) and Orakpo only has one pass rush move...The BullRush. He seemingly only makes plays when he has only to make a B-Line to the carrier....If he's in open space with a QB/RB (Just look how bad Romo makes him look) he usually can't make the play..

I think a lot of it is due to him playing out of control. He doesn't have elite agility but he has enough to get where he wants to go. He just needs to learn the nuances of rushing the passer, I.E counter moves and taking more calculated angles to the QB. If he can't learn it under Lou Spanos, who was the OLB coach in Pittsburgh for 15 years, he won't learn it under anyone.

That's fine. But not sure how you can learn to be better against the run or in coverage.
