Would someone please explain how, in the NFL not college, a ball carrier is down when his knee hits the turf, with no one touching him?

Talking about that TD call that was overturned as "down by contact." No one touched the player who caught the ball in field, then his knee hit, then he lunged into the end zone.

This is a touchdown. Wouldn't have mattered if had crawled 10 yards as long as no one touches him.

Am I right?
