B/R: 10 Reasons the Dallas Cowboys Need to Replace Tony Romo

10 Reasons the Dallas Cowboys Need to Replace Tony Romo
By Jason Henry (Cowboys Featured Columnist)
March 15, 2011 - Arlington

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s left collarbone may be healed, but maybe his ego is a little bruised. Early this offseason reports surfaced that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was interested in drafting former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and things only snowballed when the Cowboys interviewed Newton at the combine.

Now the rattle on the fence to get rid of Romo has swelled to a steady shake. Is it time for Dallas to finally part ways with the now aging quarterback?

Here are 10 reasons Jerry Jones needs to replace Tony Romo:

1) Romo will turn 31 years old this year, and the clock is starting to run out of time on his NFL career and his time in Dallas. He’s about to enter his fifth full season as Cowboys starting quarterback and if he can’t get it done in the next year or two, it will be time for Jerry to pull the trigger on replacing Romo.
2) Romo can look great at times as evidenced by his play against the Eagles when the team won their first playoff game since 1996. But then Romo can look awful. Remember the game against Buffalo when he threw five interceptions? Dallas needs a quarterback who can make better decisions and if Jerry wants a Super Bowl soon, he may be forced to make a change.
3) Throughout Tony’s tenure as quarterback in Dallas there has always been a question mark regarding the way Romo leads his team. This is, after all, his team. When Dallas started to fall apart last year there were questions as to if Romo would say anything to straighten the locker room out. After the Cowboys suffered a devastating playoff loss to Minnesota and the offensive line broke down, questions arose again about how Tony would respond.
4) If Jerry continues to put Tony behind an aging, depleted offensive line then Romo is destined for failure. As long as Romo sees the field vertically, then the calls for him to be replaced will only continue to get louder.
5) Romo seems to be concerned about how he’s viewed in the media and by fans. Well, not about how he dresses, but that’s another article. Romo says all the right things in the media, but they seem to translate to on the field success. Yes he has a ton of passing yards, but has only turned in one playoff win.
6) While I’m no fan of replacing Romo with Cam Newton, you have to admit that Newton has done a fantastic job of forcing his draft stock upward. Newton is nothing short of a two to three year project and if Jerry wants to look toward the future, Cam is at least a weapon to consider.
7) Currently Dallas has three of the National Football League’s most talented running backs on their roster in Tashard Choice, Marion Barber and Felix Jones. While there is no guarantee that all three will be back in 2011 maybe, just maybe, if Romo were to leave, that would open up more opportunities for the running game.
8) It may not matter who quarterbacks the Cowboys, but Garrett is obviously a pass-happy type of play-caller. But when backup quarterback Jon Kitna was under center the offense did see more balance and the running game seemed to get better.
9) Whether Jerry decides to replace Tony isn’t really the key question, it's when. Jones has to start searching for Romo’s replacement whether he wants to or not. If Jerry wants to set the team up for success going forward Dallas will have start the search for the future.
10) Remember Jessica Simpson? What about Carrie Underwood? Maybe Tony’s golf game is the problem? Tony usually has a busy offseason that includes women and golf. While he’s engaged now and his dating life has been put to bed, maybe he needs to do the same to his golf game?

One thing everybody ignores about Romo and it's a huge issue, is he's never had a chance to succeed. He's played his entire short career as an NFL starter with Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips. Tom Brady couldn't win with that "leadership".

He had a few games with Parcells just getting his feet wet as a starter. That's it.

I can not judge him on failing to win a title. Not with that scenario at play. I wouldn't expect any QB to do it.

But I would look to replace him now. Get a guy in here to prepare for it. Don't wait until you have nothing and then expect one to fall into your lap.

Yep, I remember that game. After turning the ball over 6 times Romo kept his composure and lead a few scoring drives to win the game.

Everyone has a life but Tony's has made headlines because of who is involved. This is the dumbest excuse on the list.

In essence, this guy wants a worse QB so we can run the ball more? How stupid is this idea?

You could label this article lame, but it makes a lot of good points.

It makes two good points combined with a bunch of lame excuses and the truth at #6 that this guy wants Newton in Dallas. I agree we need to find his replacement but don't try to explain it away with a garbage argument.

F that.

This article is horrible.

If you're gonna make a case for replacing your franchise QB at age 31 then it better be good.

The way I see it... 31 is still a pretty good age for a QB. You just need to protect him.. Our line sucks. No QB will do good or last long behind it, not to mention we'll have no running game either. No running game + No offensive line = No chance to protect your QB.

I agree we shouldn't wait until he's done but if we can't get a guy to groom this year then we'll have to wait til next year... and I think thats perfectly fine. Barring any career ending injury we'll be alright.

I stand corrected, I didn't see where he said he wants Newton in Dallas.

No thank you.

Wouldn't Jason Henry have been better served to just post "Romo sucks,F'k him."

I think the team is 38-17 or close to it with Romo under center.

He's a long way from done.

That being said,I'd like to see this position approached more like Staubach/White and less like Aikman/Oh Shit!

It makes an excellent point that we need to begin looking for Romo's replacement now.

We absolutely must be proactive in getting Romo's heir on the team and beginning the grooming process.

That said, Cam Newton...no.

Also, any article that calls Marion Barber one of the most talented running backs in the league reeks of homer shit.

You should draft a QB every year, to mold, or trade for a higher pick later, that's for sure. We'll be having this same discussion, or should, next year, and the year after.

What this asshole fails to mention about that game is that during the week leading up to that game, Romo had received news that his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Now maybe, just maybe that might have affected his play in that game and yet he still maintained his composure.

Whuile Romo is 31 years old, he doesn't have all the wear and tear like all the other QBs his age that came into the league and started off the bat.

So lets say you have a probowl starter, a capable backup and a 3rd guy you like and believe has the tools to develop. Why would you waste a pick on a QB just for the sake of drafting a QB? Your only going to keep 3, some teams only 2. You might have an added guy on the practice squad, but you arnt guaranteed to keep that guy as he can sign elsewhere to somebody's active roster.

I've heard the argument before, and I dont buy into it. Now if you dont like one of your QB's, sure draft one with the intent of replacing somebody.
