Don Banks: Akers A Cowboy?

Per Don Banks' draft wrap-up...

• The David Akers era in Philly looks like it's at the "thanks for the memories'' stage after the Eagles spent a fourth-round pick on Nebraska's Alex Henery. The ex-Cornhusker went 120th overall, the highest a kicker has been selected since New England took Stephen Gostkowski two spots earlier than that in 2006.

Akers is a free agent and he's not done kicking in the NFL. Given the challenges the Cowboys and Redskins have had with kickers in recent years, I wouldn't be surprised if Akers wound up somewhere else in the NFC East, facing his old team twice a year. Not exactly the Donovan McNabb to Washington storyline of 2010, but it might be fun.

I'd take him in a heartbeat, but my fear is that our team will want to stick with Beuhler.

I think we've seen about enough of Buehler and his shanked kicks.

We signed Kris Brown too. Let the three of them fight it out if there's a TC.

My money is on Akers.

I almost want to give Buehler another season (on a short leash), but my fear is that if/when he fails and management finally decides they've had enough, we'll be stuck digging the Jose Cortez's of the world off the garbage heap.

But then again, I guess with the new kickoff rules there isn't be such a compelling reason to keep Buehler around...

Not for nothing echo, but we have been patient enough I would think.

Sign Akers and let them fight it out. Akers can make those field goals that Buehler missed blind folded. Just not as high.

Imagine the outcry if he were a Cowboy and missed two field goals in a playoff game (like he did vs GB)

I'm pretty sure he had some serious personal issues going on that week. I don't remember what, but I think it might have involved his kids? Again, not sure.

I like Beuhler. I think he's got the confidence, want to, and natural talent to develop into a quality kicker. And I think he's better than his rep. He's just so damned frustrating. He'll drill a 49 yarder and make it look easy, then turn around and shank a 34 yarder.

We can't sign Akers now. He's not available. Odds are, Philly carry's him and their rook all the way through camp, and cut Akers at the last moment. By then, we should have a general idea what Beuhler is, and if he's improved.

Lets not forget, we also have Kris Brown under contract as well.

I think they were saying he was going through a separation with his wife.

I'm sure you meant Akers.

You're right, of course. I don't know why I'm so willing to turn a blind eye when it comes to this scrub (and I mean that in the most complimentary of ways) aside from sheer idiocy/homerism on my part.

We've been patient enough? He's only had one year. Jeeze people.

He showed improvement throughout the season, now you want to cut him for a career 81 percent FG kicker who had 3 straight seasons of mid 70's percentage recently and just missed 2 "clutch" kicks in a playoff game?

Please.. Buehler will be here, and as long as he continues to improve i'd stick with him. He has more potential than anyone we could bring in.

Akers has missed 6 throughout his career and missed 2 in a year twice. So i guess that counts him out. It also counts out Vinatieri, Bironas, and some of the other greatest kickers ever.
