Prosecution details events it says led to Odin Lloyd’s homicide

For more than 20 minutes, Bristol County prosecutor William McCauley stood in a Massachusetts courtroom Wednesday detailing the events that led to Aaron Hernandez's arrest and subsequent charge of first-degree murder.

With Hernandez, who pled not guilty to the charge, standing just a few feet away, McCauley went through a timeline of events – extracted from surveillance videos, cell phone records and cell phone towers – that the prosecution says ended with the execution of Odin Lloyd:

June 16

9:02 p.m.: Hernandez texts a friend out of state saying "please make it back"

9:05: Hernandez texts Lloyd that he wants to get together

9:35: Hernandez texts a friend in Connecticut that says "get your ass up here"

10:23: Hernandez texts the same friend, "Hurry your ass up"

McCauley indicated that Hernandez recently had 14 surveillance cameras installed in his home. Video from the cameras show two men arriving at Hernandez's home in North Attelboro. Later footage shows Hernandez with a firearm. At one point, Hernandez says to one of the men that he "can't trust anyone anymore," according to McCauley.

June 17

1:12 a.m.: The three men depart Hernandez's home in a silver Nissan Altima, according to surveillance video, cell phone towers and cell phone records.

Cell towers track their movement south on Interstate-95. At some point, they turn around, then head north before stopping at a gas station on Route 128.

2:10: Hernandez buys gas, a pack of Bubblicious gum, and rolling papers.

2:32: The silver Altima arrives at Lloyd's house. Hernandez sends a text message: "We're here."

Lloyd's sister watches Odin Lloyd leave the house and get into the silver Altima. Neighborhood surveillance video shows Hernandez arriving in the neighborhood, as well.

Surveillance video tracks the car around Boston.

McCauley explains that during ride back toward North Attelboro, Hernandez tells Lloyd that when they were at a club, Rumors, the previous Friday night, "certain things upset him," including Lloyd talking to some people Hernandez had "troubles" with. McCauley did not indicate how he obtained this information.

Prosecution says the text indicates the "temperature" in the car"

3:07: Lloyd texts his sister, "Did you see who I was with?"

McCauley suggests that this indicates the "temperature" in the car.

Lloyd does not receive a response.

3:11: Lloyd texts his sister again, "Hello"

3:19: Lloyd's sister responds, "My phone was dead. Who?"

3:22: Lloyd responds, "NFL"

3:23: Lloyd: "Just so you know"

By this point, the four men inside the silver Altima have gotten off I-95 on Route 152, near Hernandez's home, McCauley says records show.

3:23 a.m.: McCauley says surveillance video shows the Altima at a fork in the road. McCauley indicates that one way leads to Hernandez's home, the other down a gravel road where Lloyd's body would later be found. Video shows Hernandez's car going down the gravel road behind a group of industrial buildings.

3:23-3:27: People working the overnight in the industrial park hear gunshots.

3:27: Silver Altima is viewed coming out of gravel road.

3:29: Video at Hernandez's home shows the silver Altima pulling into his driveway.

McCauley states that the distance between where Lloyd's body was found and Hernandez's home is a 2-minute drive.

The crime scene:

• According to McCauley, police found five shell casings – three at Lloyd's feet, two some distance away.

• An autopsy showed two wounds to the chest – one near the left nipple, the other near the right nipple.

• Lloyd did not appear to be robbed, as he still had his wallet, phone and keys.

McCauley explained that Hernandez returned the Altima to a rental car agency, with the driver's-side mirror missing. A worker at rental agency discovered a shell casing under the driver's seat, next to a Bubblicious wrapper. The shell casing and the gum wrapper were tossed into a garbage bin, where police later found.

After McCauley finished, Hernandez's defense team requested their client be granted bail based on the prosecution's reliance on circumstantial evidence. "It is at bottom a circumstantial case," Hernandez's attorney Michael Fee told the court. "It is not a strong case." Bail was denied and Hernandez, who stood expressionless through most of the arraignment, remained in custody.

Examining Aaron Hernandez’s ‘blood’ tattoo on his right hand

By Larry Brown June 27, 2013 -

aaron-hernandez-blood-tattoo.jpg

Aaron Hernandez has a tattoo on his right hand that has the word “blood” written in red ink, and the tat was frequently discussed Wednesday in the context of the tight end’s arrest and first-degree murder charge.

Some wondered if “blood” meant Hernandez was part of the widely known gang. Others felt it was an ominous symbol that Hernandez literally has “blood” written on his hands, and figuratively may have blood on his hands from the alleged killing.

I think you can strike the former theory for a few reasons. One, it looks like “blood” is part of a longer phrase tattooed on his hand, which I’m guessing is blood, sweat and tears. You can see what looks like an “S” and “W” just after “blood.” Secondly, if you’re actually a member of the Bloods, you wouldn’t get a tattoo that says “blood.” You would probably get one with the number “5″ or the letter “P.”

There were some reports that Hernandez had friends with gang ties, but those have been unconfirmed. We don’t know what kinds of activities Hernandez was doing away from the football field but, based on what has emerged the past few weeks, most of it seems unsavory.

Yep, sounds like someone turned states on him.

Ironic given Hernandez statement, "you can't trust anyone anymore." Why have a group of people involved in the killing? Why not try to hide the body? It's like he thought he was untouchable because he was an NFL player or something.

The whole thing is sloppy and weird. You almost want to say it was a spur of the moment decision, but calling his friends up and getting rental cars kinds of flies in the face of that theory.

Well the crime actually took place in Bristol CT, I believe. But yeah, your point still stands.

Thats said, I was refering to how quickly the whole thing took place.... driving down the gravel road, getting Odin out of the car, depositing 5 bullets into the body, and driving out.... all in like, 3-4 minutes.

Source: Hernandez investigated in Boston double-killing

Posted: Jun 27, 2013 9:00 AM CST Updated: Jun 27, 2013 9:10 AM CST

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- FOX 25 has learned exclusively that investigators are looking into Aaron Hernandez as a possible suspect in a double murder that happened on July 16, 2012 in downtown Boston.

According to the Boston Police blog from that date, officers responded to the intersection of Shawmut Avenue and Herald Street just after 2 a.m. When they arrived, they found three people had been shot, two fatally, as they sat in a car at a traffic light.

The men were identified as Safiro Furtado and Daniel Abreu. The FOX 25 source said the men, who worked at a cleaning company in Dorchester, had just left a bar in the area.

Furtado and Abreu were sitting in the front seat of the vehicle when witnesses said the occupants of a gray or silver SUV with Rhode Island plates opened fire on it. The surviving victim was in the back seat. Investigators believed two others in the car fled the scene.

The source said that investigators were looking into Aaron Hernandez's connection to the killing.

On Wednesday, Hernandez was charged with murder in the death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, of Dorchester.

An investigation is ongoing.

I can't imagine the level of shitstorm coming if he did kill those guys and went undetected for a year. There would have to be a number of other people who knew about that. Are the guys he called in for the Lloyd killing also involved in the first one?

It is a striking difference, we have in Brent a guy that failed his blood test and actually has proof against him that he literally was driving a car and killed his passenger. Still on team until found guilty.

Patty's have a guy that was arrested and before he's even got dry ink on the paperwork, fired. No proof made available of his guilt, no questions asked. Good bye.

Just wow.
Strangely enough, another difference would be that one person died by an accident caused by poor choices made by himself and his friend who was driving. The other was a guy that died from another person purposely shooting them.

Maybe or maybe not. But looking at the execution style killing of Odin Loyd, you kind of get the sense that this probably isn't the first time Hernandez killed someone. Afterall, it was reported that he shot some guy in the face----don't know how they kept that hush-hush, a few years ago.

Reports are Lloyd was killed because he knew about the Boston killings

More and more media outlets have confirmed the jaw-dropping news from FOX 25 that police are investigating Aaron Hernandez in connection with a July 2012 double murder that occurred in Boston.

The latest detail from the Boston Globe will make jaws drop even farther. According to Maria Cramer of the Globe, an unnamed law-enforcement official has said there’s a possible link between the crimes.

“The motive [for killing Odin Lloyd] might have been that [Lloyd] knew [Hernandez] might have been involved” in the July 2012 homicides, the unnamed law-enforcement official told Cramer.

If true, this would help explain why Hernandez allegedly was upset with Lloyd for something he had said to others on Friday, July 14. As prosecutor Bill McCauley explained it in court on Wednesday, “The victim had spoken to a couple of people and the defendant told him he was upset about that because he had essentially troubles with those people.”

While McCauley didn’t elaborate, it doesn’t require a huge leap in logic to wonder whether Lloyd had given a friendly warning to the people with whom Hernandez had “troubles” regarding the way Hernandez had dealt with other people with whom he had “troubles” in the past. Though we’re speculating, the motive to kill Lloyd surely came from something that gave Hernandez serious concern. Concern doesn’t get much more serious than Hernandez fearing Lloyd would say something that would result in Hernandez being arrested or prosecuted for the July 2012 murders.

If, at is appears, at least one or both of the other two men who were in the car with Hernandez and Lloyd on the night of Lloyd’s death have cooperated with police, it’s possible that one or both of the other two men told the authorities about the events of July 16, 2012.

Regardless of how this all plays out, look for Hernandez’s lawyer to complain at today’s bail hearing about the apparent violation of the gag order that the presiding judge imposed on Wednesday. It’s hardly a coincidence that news of the other investigation has emerged the day after Hernandez was charged with killing Lloyd. To the extent the unsolved murders of July 2012 enhance the motive for killing Lloyd, the leak hurts Hernandez even more in the court of public opinion.

Please keep in mind that Hernandez has not been charged with any other crimes beyond the events surrounding the death of Odin Lloyd.

Judge in the Hernandez bail hearing calls the State's case "a very, very strong circumstantial case," and she denies appeal for bail.
