The problem is that by the time the defense is fixed (two years if they draft well?), the offense could be in decline. Romo and Witten can't play at a high level forever.

we've done the coach carousel thing before. won't work without a real GM.

I think the roster assembling has been pointing up.

It may have finally sunk into Jerry's thick skull that players approaching, and esp in, their 30s should never be extended. Minus if they are a franchise QB.

The drafts have been slowly getting better and I like that they kept the Parcells' approach of constantly churning the bottom of the barrel and taking flyers on troubled, but talented players. Yes, I like the McClain move and trading for Weeden.

we have a habit of only getting two hits out of a draft instead of four or five. we need guys like Randle, Crawford, Webb, Escobar, Wilcox, Wilber, Hanna, Matt Johnson :lol and Holloman to play well and salvage those drafts. then there's Claiborne ...

I agree. Jerry's timing sucks. IMO, the OL should have been upgraded years ago.

But on the brighter side, maybe Frederick & Co. will pave the way for Romo's successor's success.

The Defense can be fixed next year. The problem is Jerry and Jason aren't competent or aggressive enough to pull it off. A new coach with clout, could fix the D in one year. In my opinion, the defense only needs to be serviceable with Romo and this offense.

For what it is worth - As tough as the Cowboys' schedule is this year, it isn't all that different from any other team's in the NFC East.

Each of the NFC East teams have to play Seattle, the 49ers, Indy, ...

The difference is that the Cowboys have New Orleans and Chicago as compared to:

Carolina and Green Bay for the Eagles
Minnesota and Tampa Bay for Washington
Lions and Cardinals for the Giants

I think the Eagles have it a little tougher than the Cowboys. Some are predicting strong seasons for Tampa Bay and Arizona, so it could turn out that the Cowboys' schedule isn't much tougher than Washington's or New York's. Besides, we are only talking two games out of a 16 game schedule so it isn't as if any of the schedules are radically easier or more difficult than any other.

It'll probably be another nauseatingly close divisional race ...

I could see Carolina and Green Bay beating the Eagles.
I could see both Minnesota and Tampa Bay beating the Redskins. Sorry, but the Redskins' defense is nothing to write home about.
Detroit and Arizona are not pushovers, and with the current state of the Giants, I could see those teams beating the Giants.

It's fascinating as to how the NFC West went from the worst division to now the best, and the NFC East went from the best to the worst, within a matter of a couple of seasons.

Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll, and Jeff Fisher. Coaching has a huge impact in football. Also, the Cardinals have been quietly drafting well for years. In fact, all four NFC West teams have been drafting well recently.

Compare the Defensive Front 7 of those 4 teams to ours.

Jerry can't fix anything "fast." Has taken him years to assemble an adequate to good offensive line. Claiborne is a dud, Carr would have been cut by most teams based on his lack of production and exorbitant salary, and we have no free safety to speak of. Meanwhile, Carter is an enigma, Lee will come back one year older and slower, and the other LB position is a revolving door of late. If DeMarcus Lawrence is another Carver or Ekuban, look out.

I made an error above. All NFC East teams are playing the Cardinals this season (of course).

The uncommon opponents for the Giants this year are Detroit and Atlanta.
