By the way, imagine if there had been some foresight and proper planning and Parcells could have promised Sean Payton that he'd be the next HC? I wonder if the topic was even broached.

Parcells was still entrenched here when Payton was being courted for head coaching positions. Remember he turned down the Raiders job and stayed in Dallas. I really believe Parcells didn't plan on leaving until the Seattle debacle. He had his QB and a team pointing up.

Didn't Parcells quit the same year or is my memory off? if so, Parcells could have had some foresight and simply told Payton, "Hey, I might leave."

Per my research, Payton left in 2006 and Bill left at the end of 2006. Bill announced his retirement on January 22, 2007. So, technically, not the "same year" but close enough.

Parcells should have walked away after the 2005 season when it was apparent Payton was going to leave.

Parcells did all kinds of good for the organization as a whole (especially in terms of how the scouting department was structured and ran) but it was obvious after the 2004 season that he didnt have "it" any longer as a HC. Payton nearly left after the 2004 season (Raiders) but Parcells and other convinced him the Raiders were not a good fit, but everyone knew that would likely be it for Payton in 2005 in Dallas.

He should have retired. Instead he coached another year and we watched as Payton turned into one of the better young head coaches and offensive masterminds in New Orleans. We went the cream puff Wade and then red headed fool route and set us up for a decade plus of frustrating futility. I have little dount Payton would have gotten a lot more out of our teams from 2006 on and we likely would have seriously competed for at least a couple or so Super Bowl appearances.

All I am saying is that Parcells could have told Sean, "look the job is yours after this year. Stay one more year, I'm done".

But because of the dynamic of Jerry, or perhaps a lack of foresight from Parcells, IDK which, it never happened. Maybe if Jerry wasn't a Pollyanna sort of guy he might have stepped in and told Bill, "look, you're thinking about leaving anyway, stick around for one more year, then we'll give it to Sean".

What I am saying is that I think there is nothing wrong with promising Belichick that his son will become the next HC in Dallas once Belichick is done.

I'm sure Belichick will be reasonable about it and won't have in the contract that his son can't be fired for like 50 years. So I say give it a shot and if his son takes over and flops, well, how are we any worse off really?

I think Bill would do everything in his power to leave his son with a winning program and CULTURE.

It's either that or might as well hire Kellen Moore and see if he can fix Dak and hope that the "Paper Boy" has what it takes. Because as you said, Kirby Smart isn't leaving.

Hopefully, Jerry at least recognizes that fans want a change. At least I do. McCarthy is a good guy, but there is just something about him.

It seems really unlikely that Ben Johnson could be an option for the Dallas Cowboys.

Don't agree. For one I'm not even sure his son is a quality coach (in any role)

Belichick should absolutely be able to pick whatever assistants he wants in whatever roles he wants them in. From there, it comes down to how successful is the team and how good is said assistant. If he sux at his job, just because daddy says "I want him to be HC one day" doesn't mean he should get it.

Well that's not exactly true. Had Parcells walked away after the mediocre 2005 season, Payton would have been a very strong candidate (if not shoo in) for HC here in 2006. And Romo was here, so he wouldn't have had to try and trade for him. (although hindsight being 20/20, that worked out great for Payton with that Brees guy)

Also for the record, the 2005 Saints were 3-13. The 2005 Cowboys finished 9-7 and also missed the playoffs.

Payton became HC in New Orleans in 2006, and the Saints went from 3-13 to 10-6 and the NFC Championship game. Dallas of course finished 9-7 (again) and lost in embarrassing fashion to a Seattle team that had street free agents playing in the secondary against us.

There's plenty wrong with that. We have no idea what quality of coach he is, and if he's anything like Bill's assistants it would not go well.

It's either that or might as well hire Kellen Moore and see if he can fix Dak and hope that the "Paper Boy" has what it takes. Because as you said, Kirby Smart isn't leaving.

If Moore had what it takes to either "fix Dak" or to be a head coach he'd either still be here or be a head coach somewhere.
