I unfortunately had to travel for work and didn't get home till late last night, watched it at a sports bar in DC.
It certainly looked very bleak the first 30 mins, but they deserve props for making it a legit game in the 2nd half. In the end, the backup QB returned to earth and showed everyone why he is a backup at best, McCarthy made one inexplicably stupid decision not to challenge an obvious 1st down spot and the defense had one bad drive in the 2nd half.
We barely lost on the road despite 3 turnovers from the backup QB (while we got none ourselves) and for the first time since week one had a bad run with penalties. A few of the penalties really hurt too (the Fowler offsides, the ST holding call that wiped out a great return, couple of good offensive plays wiped out) but just the Fowler play and the McCarthy gaffe cost us a total of 7 pts, which would have flipped the game our way.
Just fyi, I found blurb last week that said the Eagles were 6-0 with this ref crew, whereas we were 3-3. Those numbers are now 7-0 and 3-4. I would be curious to see if all 6 of those previous Eagles wins had a similar lopsided penalty number for/against as ours did. I'm not complaining too much about the 10 we got, most were clearly deserved. But the Eagles got called for only two penalties and no offensive holding calls. They had a couple different backup OL at the game in the 2nd half too.
To me there are some (I said SOME) similarities between this game and the game in 1992 where we played them early in the season and they blew us out in Philly. We had turnovers and some other mistakes but we actually moved the ball and outgained them that night (which we had struggled mightily to do against them for years prior to that) and after the game Jimmy actually seemed even more confident about out ability to match up against them physically. We played them two more times that yr and basically dominated both games (incl the playoff ass whipping) and beat them easily be avoiding the turnovers. I don't know if we would have won "easily" without the turnovers this time, but we definitely would have won.
We won 4 games with a backup QB that some (incl myself) didnt believe should have even made the team out of camp. If Prescott simply plays at an ACCEPTABLE level, avoids turnovers and creates an occasional big play downfield with his arm or extending 3rd downs with his legs if we keep playing defense the way we are and stay committed to the run, we should be in good shape. Our special teams are really good and we'll win one or two games this year because of them
