Yeah I was a bit surprised, there were much more coveted players, more highly rated ones, available. What little video I saw on 'Taco' I wasn't impressed, looks fat and slow.Sigh... a one year starter? I would have gone Foster in the first and Willis in the second.
who are you talking about?
I just get this feeling "Taco" would have still been there when our 2nd round pick came up. Not wild about this one.
Yep that's true but the way this draft fell, there were more highly coveted/rated players than "Taco" still available when we picked. It's just not a pick that's exciting anyone.I never saw any reports anywhere that said he'd make it to late 2nd rd. Almost everyone had him rated late 1st/early 2nd.
Taco Charlton kinda has the looks of one of those solid starter guys. May never be an elite player, but he doesn't have any injury or drug history, works hard and got better every year at Michigan. He obviously got quality coaching there and our safety coach was on Harbaugh's staff at Michigan so he is also pretty familiar with him. His best season was this past one when the new defensive coordinator shifted to a 4-3 defense and he moved back to DE.
Sounds like they are going to plug him in at LDE. With Gregory gone, Lawrence a huge question mark and coming up in the last yr of his deal, we need DE's. He's a nice add. Not spectacular, but could be a very dependable player for years to come. Maybe a Jim Jeffcoat type LDE.
They traded for Marshawn Lynch
4. TACO CHARLTON, Michigan (6-5½, 274, 4.83, 1-2): Played through an ankle injury in 2016, his first as a starter. “He appeared on the scene for just one year,” said one scout. “I don’t know where he’s been. I don’t think he could stand up. More of a down guy. He did have a good year but we’re a little nervous about him.” Some 3-4 teams feel he could play OLB. “For what we’re asking, (yes),” a second scout said. “His 40 time was not good but there are games this guy can do whatever he wants as a rusher. I entertained the thought of him being the best rusher in the draft. There’s times this guy one-arm bull-rushes guys and just humiliates them. He’s tall, but he can bend and get low.” Playing DE, finished with 94 tackles (27 ½ for loss) and 18 ½ sacks. Wonderlic of 22. “Reminded me of (Cameron) Heyward, the kid from Ohio State that Pittsburgh took in the first (2011), but he’s better,” a third scout. “More movement skills. No, no, no, no, noooo, you would be doing him and your defense a disservice at outside backer. There’s no way he can play up.” From Pickerington, Ohio.
24 Taco Charlton - DE, Michigan
Charlton has a tall, athletic build with excellent length. As a pass rusher, he can win with quickness or power. He can dip and rip or employ a pure bull rush. He doesn't have an elite get-off but he has a great feel for how he's being blocked, effectively countering to get to the passer. Against the run, he's inconsistent. He flashes the ability to shoot his hands and keep defenders off his chest but he also gets cut a bunch. That's correctable. Overall, Charlton has the size, athletic ability and savvy to be a solid three-down defender very early in his NFL career.
36. Taco Charlton, Edge, Michigan
Charlton is a physical specimen who simply overpowered college offensive tackles on the edge last season. Standing a legit 6-foot-6, 277 pounds, Charlton was a forced to be reckoned with as a bull-rusher and somehow had one of the most effective spin moves in the country at that size. He registered 18 combined sacks and hits last year, despite rushing the passer only 251 times. — Mike Renner, @PFF_Mike
42 Taco Charlton - DE, Michigan
Four-year player who had only started four games going into 2016 season. Had best game of college career against Ohio State (2.5 sacks, 3 pressures, 9 tackles), a performance that opened many eyes among NFL scouts. Finished with 10 sacks in 2016. Ran better at his pro day (4.85-second 40) after running 4.92 at the combine. Has long arms (34 1/4 inches). Looks the part, but does not always play the part. Very inconsistent. Underachiever label. Has size you want for position. Might be best suited to play left end.

This is why I'm pissed the Cowboys released Romo, you never know when some team might give you something
Brugler's comparison is Justin Tuck.Jeffcoat? I'll take that. I'm thinking more Greg Ellis.
Jeffcoat? I'll take that. I'm thinking more Greg Ellis.
Kiper for one, didn't even have him in his top 10 DL's still available.Like who exactly?
They released him so he wouldn't have to pay back all that guaranteed money.
