WTF HAPPENED!

There were concerns with Lacy about his weight before, but man. I thought it had to have been photo shopped but apparently it wasn't. He must weigh 260+

B-Rods thoughts....

OXNARD, Calif. - Some quick thoughts from the practice field in Oxnard:

•Ronald Leary returned to practice today and was working his way back into the mix running with the second line but as the third guard. My gut tells me that Leary might spend today working his way back in but don't look for it to take long for him to compete for the starting job. He has a lot of fans on this staff. :jerry

•Speaking of the staff, defensive end George Selvie fresh off the street has turned some heads in these practices with his work off the edge. The front office was not interested in adding a high dollar pickup to the mix while Anthony Spencer was recovering and with the addition of Selvie and the shifting of Ben Bass, they feel much better about the situation there.

•Rookie linebacker DeVonte Holloman is a much better defender against the pass than he showed on tape at South Carolina. He has shown athletic ability and awareness when placed in coverage situations.

•With Barry Church out of the lineup with a tooth that was giving him trouble, rookie safety J.J. Wilcox took his place during the walk through and will most likely do so the next several days. It was interesting that the coaches went with him over Matt Johnson but that seems to be how these coaches as a group are using these rookies. We have seen it at two other spots, center and third receiver. It appears that this rookie class is going to contribute right off the bat.

•Despite being the fourth running back on the depth chart right now, look for Joseph Randle to continue to get plenty of work these next five weeks according to Jason Garrett. What I have liked about his game so far is that he is not afraid of the physical side of the game. When he has been asked to step up and block, he has not been one bit shy. That is very important.

•A name you haven't heard in while is that of tackle Demetress Bell but in visiting with some members of the front office, there really is a plan for him. They knew he was in poor physical condition but they also feel like as a veteran tackle that he could get himself right physically here in the next couple of weeks then when they need him for these preseason games that he would be ready to go. The hope is to try and get him back to the form he showed in Buffalo. Edawn Coughman and Darrion Weems have been taking the majority of the reps at tackle while Jermey Parnell has been out as well. Offensive and defensive linemen are tough to find in this time of the year so taking a chance on Bell who has experience is worth the shot at this point.

Nate Newton says Leary looks really good... At least way better than anything else. Says he can really bend his knees where a lot of guys can't.

Said yeah, you want competition and all that, but this guy should win the job unless he goes way backwards.

I think he has a degenerative condition in his knee that'll limit the duration of his career, but won't affect him on gameday. If that makes any sense. I could be wrong.

Garrett likes Leary's nasty demeanor, said undrafted guard has made significant mental jump from rookie year.

Garrett on Ron Leary: "He's a long way off." Says Nate Livings has been a little rusty.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said OG Ron Leary had a great first day. Said difference mentally from Year 1 to 2 is "significant."

It's degenerative, so he won't have a long career. But that doesn't mean he can't play now.

And he didn't say get his bust ready for Canton, just that he looked better than what was out there. Which admittedly isn't much. I guess Livings has something wrong with him and still doesn't look right.

Listening to Garrett, it sounds like Leary is seen as having a significantly greater upside than Kowalski.

The coaches hope Kowalski can overcome physical limitations through learning better technique and being more crafty. Leary is seen as already having the size, quickness, and explosion. Both are seen as RGKs.

Cowboys lose guard Kevin Kowalski to leg problem mid-practice, continuing the OL injury shuffle

The Cowboys got two offensive linemen healthy this week, but they may have lost one.

Guard Kevin Kowalski left Tuesday’s practice with a leg injury.

Offensive line coach Bill Callahan said after practice he didn’t know how bad the injury was. It’s another challenge for a line that began training camp without last year’s starting guards, Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau, and a reserve guard, Ron Leary, because of injury.

Kowalksi had worked with David Arkin on the first team until Livings and Leary returned this week. Callahan said Bernadeau, who had offseason shoulder surgery, might be able to go next week.

The Cowboys worked out a guard before Tuesday's practice.

Callahan credited Arkin’s progress for bringing some stability to the line. Arkin has not missed any practice.

“I like the progress that he’s made since he arrived in camp,” Callahan said. “He makes incremental progress. It’s good to see him focus on one technique and get better on a daily basis. I’m really proud of him. He’s worked hard.”

Cowboys S Barry Church sidelined by Jolly Rancher LOL

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) -- Barry Church is finished with Jolly Ranchers. The candy-loving Dallas Cowboys safety missed a day of training camp because of a cherry-flavored one.

Church chipped a tooth on a piece of the hard candy about a week before reporting to camp. He felt pain off and on, but says it was unbearable when he woke up Monday morning.

The fourth-year pro missed a walkthrough and a full practice to get a root canal, but returned Tuesday.

Church says he ''caught a couple of zingers'' from coaches and teammates and isn't happy that he has to stay away from candy for a while.

Once he can eat candy again, Church says he'll ''stick to the soft stuff.''

Church missed the final 13 games last year with a torn Achilles' tendon.

Cowboys practice report: Day 9

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Cowboys worked on short-yardage, two-minute and goal-line situations in addition to individual drills during Tuesday's practice.

• Quarterback Tony Romo participated in the session after convincing the coaches he didn't want a day off. Romo looked good moving around the pocket and was throwing tight spirals. He showed good movement when flushed out of the pocket by Kyle Wilber in the goal-line drills. Romo scrambled to his right and threw a hard pass into the end zone.

• Without a fullback on the roster, the Cowboys used Dante Rosario as the H-back on goal-line plays. The first run of the drill came with Rosario blocking for running back Phillip Tanner. Tanner followed that up with a good block on defensive tackle Monte Taylor. Tanner's block allowed Kyle Orton time to throw a touchdown pass to Rosario in the back of the end zone.

*Joseph Randle had his best day in camp on the short yardage by scoring twice in the short-yardage. It seems he's able to get low when he hits the hole, something he's been working on in practice. Coach Jason Garrett said Randle is expected to get plenty of carries during the preseason. With DeMarco Murray held out of the goal-line plays, Randle was given more snaps.

• Safety Matt Johnson is technically a rookie. He missed all of last season with a hamstring injury, and the time away shows. On a short pass to Rosario, Johnson came up fast to make the tackle, but the tight end side-stepped him and ran down the field. Johnson is anxious to make plays, but if he had slowed down, he would have made the tackle for a loss.

• Cole Beasley (quad) returned to practice after missing two days of work and dropped two passes. After his last drop, a player on the sidelines yelled at him to take his gloves off.

• DeMarcus Ware is such an explosive force on defense, making plays all over the field. During an end-around with receiver Dwayne Harris, Ware came from the other side of the field and yanked him down from the shoulder pads after a short gain. You could blame Gavin Escobar for missing the block or Ware's being too fast to stop. During pass-rush drills, Ware worked on both the left and right sides, and while Tyron Smith and Doug Free held their own at times, Ware's speed allowed him to beat Free quickly for a sack. Taylor also beat Free during the pass rush.

• Linebackers Alex Albright and Ernie Sims got some first-team snaps with Justin Durant getting a day off.

• Wide receiver Terrance Williams displayed his speed after catching a hitch and getting downfield. Williams got off the line of scrimmage quickly, displayed patience by catching the pass and quickly got downfield.

• "Gossip Girl" and "Revenge" TV star Connor Paolo was in attendance.

*William Wesley, otherwise known as 'World Wide Wes', a consultant for many NBA players, who works for CAA, attended practice.

Disappointing that Kowalski got hurt. Here's hoping it isn't serious. ... the guy might just have the potential to become a serviceable starter.

Add me to the list of people who believe Leary will be a starter this season.

Not sure why, but I find myself pulling for Dewayne Harris and Cole Beasley.

Sucks to hear about Kowalski. That just means we keep one of these shitty backup tackles when it gets down to the numbers.
