Cutler and Briggs Out Monday

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and linebacker Lance Briggs will miss Monday night's home game against Dallas.

Coach Marc Trestman on Thursday said Cutler remains out with a high ankle sprain, while Briggs will not return from a shoulder fracture. Cutler practiced on a limited basis Thursday while Briggs went through conditioning work on the sidelines, but did not practice.

Josh McCown will make his fifth start in Cutler's absence, and Trestman couldn't be certain whether Cutler will be available the following week at Cleveland.

''From the work today, it just looks like he's progressing,'' Trestman said of Cutler. ''I haven't talked to him specifically about it, but he seemed to work through the practice very well. He did the things that the trainers have asked him to do, but didn't overdo it.''

Cutler has been out with the ankle sprain since the final series of the Bears' 21-19 loss to the Detroit Lions Nov. 10. He had also missed one game with a torn groin muscle. Trestman did not see Cutler's inability to play this week as a setback in terms of his recovery.

''Jay is very clear on where he is medically,'' Trestman said. ''He's continuing to progress. I think we've been very, very clear that he's got to be released by the doctors before he can play, and he's come to terms with that. He's a strong-willed and strong-minded guy.

''He can't control this decision on Monday other than to continue to work at his rehab.''

Trestman has said he's certain Cutler will play again this year, and Thursday said nothing has changed. He added Cutler has maintained a positive attitude throughout the injury process.

''He's preparing as if he's playing each and every week He's been great during the games and during the time he spends with Josh and the quarterbacks,'' Trestman said. ''He hasn't flinched at all. I'm sure he's very frustrated that he is not playing certainly. But he hasn't let that reflect in his attitude or in his demeanor in the locker room or in our meetings.''

McCown has a quarterback rating of 103.6 on the season and has thrown for 707 yards the past two weeks, but the Bears lost to St. Louis and Minnesota and had trouble turning all the yardage into scores. Cutler has an 88.3 passer rating in eight starts but the Bears average almost six points more per game when he is in the lineup.

''I think they both do a great job, different personalities definitely inside the huddle, when the call comes in and the way they go through their reads,'' tight end Martellus Bennett said. ''Jay has a stronger arm and can do different things with just his arm strength, rely on his arm strength, and Josh relies on timing and being where we need to be.

''So Jay could make some throws that Josh may not be able to make in some different situations, but they both do a great job for us, and it shows. Every single week we've still been putting up numbers no matter who's there.''

Defense has been the chief problem for Chicago, with Briggs, cornerback Charles Tillman (torn triceps), linebacker D.J. Williams (pectoral muscle) and defensive tackle Henry Melton (torn ACL) all out. Briggs' return was expected to be a boost for a defense that has been shredded for an average of 205.2 yards rushing over the last six games.

''With the injuries, that's what makes it tough,'' cornerback Tim Jennings said. ''Of course, we never want guys to go down. There doesn't have to be a reason or why, that's just how the game goes.

''We've got to have our young guys and some of the other guys step up and play a lot better.''

The Bears did get some help on the defensive line last week when injured nose tackle Stephen Paea returned from injury and former Cowboys defensive tackle Jeremiah Ratliff played for the first time since November, 2012 because of a torn groin muscle. Ratliff is anxious to get on the field again, but not because he'll be facing the team that let him go while he was rehabbing an injury. It's more a question now of whether Ratliff can regain the talent level that put him in the Pro Bowl.

''Since I've been in this league there's been a lot of questions ... 'He's too small. He's a seventh-rounder. He won't make the team,' '' Ratliff said. ''I mean, the odds are always stacked against you.

''That's good. It's motivation for me. And I look forward to it.''

The Packers just cut a safety that they drafted in the 4th round last year. I know literally nothing about him.

And we're out signing a FB and another TE that were out on the street.

The Cowboys think they are set at Safety. They feel Barry Church, JJ, Wilcox, Matt Johnson, and Jeff Heath are legit players. Nevermind the worst pass defense in franchise history.

From Pro Football Focus' Third Quarter Stock Report:
Stock Up: Mackenzy Bernadeu (+9.1, Q3 2013; -1.2, Q2 2013)

Only three games for the Cowboys this month but strong performances in each of them for Bernadeu whose dreadful season debut against the Giants is a long way in the past now. His +5.3 run block grade this month was topped by only Evan Mathis (+8.4) and Rodger Saffold (+6.4) but Bernadeu also played well in pass protection surrendering only three pressures (1 Sk, 1 Ht, 1 Hu).

Barry fucking Church? I get Hatcher and lee, both are pro bowl worthy. But Church?

Three Cowboys Near Top of Pro-Bowl Voting

And they're all on Defense. Yet the defense sucks. Figure that one out.

Defensive tackle Jason Hatcher, inside linebacker Sean Lee and free safety Barry Church are among the leaders at their respective positions in fan voting for the 2014 Pro Bowl.

Hatcher, who leads the Cowboys with nine sacks, and enters a free-agency year has 224,873 votes. Lee, second on the team in tackles with 93 and the team leader with four interceptions, received 193,027 votes. Church, the leading-tackler with 101, picked up 87,634 votes.

CZ members probably stuffing the ballot box. Church is an OK in the box guy, but I'm not impressed with his coverage.

I'm not either. He's a liability on deep passes because he doesn't understand angles or play the ball well.

Ken Whisenhunt eyed by Texans

Updated: December 8, 2013, 11:17 AM ET

The Houston Texans already have Ken Whisenhunt squarely on the radar for their head coaching vacancy and are expected to interview the San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator at the soonest chance possible, league sources said.

The Texans are expected to interview Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt for their head coaching vacancy as soon as possible, sources said.

Houston also has some level of interest in former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith, Stanford head coach David Shaw and Texans interim head coach Wade Phillips, among others.

Texans general manager Rick Smith and Whisenhunt got to know each other well from the one year they spent together working on the NFL's competition committee. Smith and Whisenhunt formed a bond, shared a respect of each other's work, and stayed in touch, the sources said.

The Texans, who have the NFL's worst record at 2-11, fired coach Gary Kubiak on Friday after suffering their 11th straight loss, falling to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.

Texans owner Bob McNair made it clear Friday that he wants to hire someone with head coaching experience, which is one more area in which Whisenhunt would fit Houston's qualifications.

Whisenhunt was the Arizona Cardinals' coach from 2007-12 and joined the Chargers after being fired by Arizona following a 5-11 season in 2012. He was 45-51 overall with the Cardinals and led them to Super Bowl XLIII, where Arizona fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Chargers are ranked fourth in total offense this season under Whisenhunt's guidance, averaging 401.6 yards per game entering Sunday's action.

Owner-QB link disillusioned coach

Updated: December 8, 2013, 11:09 AM ET

By Dan Graziano | ESPN.com

Shanahan Was Ready To Quit After 2012

As speculation mounts about Mike Shanahan's future in Washington, details have emerged about the coach's dissatisfaction with the relationship between owner Dan Snyder and quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Disillusioned with the way Snyder was running the organization, Shanahan cleaned out his office in advance of January's wild-card playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks and expected to leave the team whenever the season ended, according to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Mike Shanahan grew disillusioned at the special treatment Robert Griffin III received from owner Dan Snyder and had planned to resign after last season before the quarterback hurt his knee in the playoffs, a source said.

The source said Shanahan had grown tired of the way Snyder empowered Griffin and openly esteemed him above all other players. Shanahan didn't blame Griffin but did blame Snyder for creating an atmosphere that Shanahan did not believe was conducive to winning. Shanahan privately told people close to him that he felt Snyder's behavior with regard to Griffin was a "complete farce."

In spite of that, Shanahan believed he would be leaving the team on a very positive note, as the Redskins had won the NFC East in his third year as their coach and were preparing for a playoff run. He believed the team had come together and shown strong character during the seven-game winning streak on which it ended the regular season.

But when Griffin injured his knee in that playoff loss, a source said, Shanahan changed his plans. He believed leaving at that point was no longer an option. He didn't want the general public, or possibly even his players, to think he left because of Griffin's injury.

Contacted this weekend about this information, Shanahan declined to comment.

Through team spokesman Tony Wyllie, the Redskins said, "That story is ridiculous."

A team source said Shanahan had grown weary by January of the way Snyder treated Griffin, empowering his quarterback and helping make him feel bigger than the team. The issue apparently carried over into the offseason and into this season.

Snyder regularly sent his security team to accompany Griffin when he went out in Washington. Snyder's personal driver was spotted picking up Griffin's then-fiancee (now wife) at road games.

But it wasn't just Snyder's relationship with Griffin that irked Shanahan. It was also the way in which he dealt with employees who had less star power than his star quarterback, sources said. After Kirk Cousins relieved an injured Griffin last December in Cleveland and led Washington to a 38-21 victory over the Browns, players and coaches spotted Snyder standing at the quarterbacks' lockers, talking only to Griffin while, one source said, Snyder "didn't acknowledge" Cousins.

The strain in the Shanahan-Snyder relationship is one of several negative backdrops to a season gone wrong in Washington, and the question now is what happens with Shanahan at season's end.

Those who know him believe that, if he was willing to walk away last season, he might be willing to do the same this offseason. Snyder also could decide to fire him.

Either way, it appears a breakup is inevitable. Shanahan has one year left on his contract, and the Redskins are struggling through a disappointing season at 3-9. As a result of the 2012 trade that allowed the Redskins to draft Griffin, the team doesn't even have a first-round draft pick in 2014. The Rams hold that pick, which, if the season ended Sunday, would be the No. 2 pick overall.
