BEREA -- Browns cornerback Joe Haden sat out practice today with the oblique injury he suffered Wednesday in practice, and the Browns are preparing to play the Cowboys without him if they have to.
Haden was limited on Wednesday after pulling the muscle early on in practice. The Browns are still hoping Haden can play Sunday, but it's uncertain at this point.
The severity of oblique muscle pulls can vary, but rookie linebacker James-Michael Johnson missed the first four games of the season after pulling his in the final preseason game.
Johnson described why the pull prevented him from playing.
"It was reaching and stuff,'' he said. "It was hard to use my left arm because it was here on my left side. Just picking up my left arm hurt . . . and trying to push against something hurt really bad.''
If Haden can't play, the Browns will have to try to defend receivers Dez Bryant and Miles Austin, and tight end Jason Witten without him.
"When anyone's down, especially a starter it hurts,'' said safety T.J. Ward. "Not having Joe will hurt us but the next guy just has to step up. That's how it's been all year. We haven't had our complete defense on the field at any point this (season) I don't think. It just seems like everyone's starting to get back and Joe, I won't say he went down, but he hasn't been practicing. Hopefully we can have him this weekend.''
In other Browns news, receiver Josh Gordon was fined $20,000 for what was deemed a blindside block on Ed Reed in the loss to the Ravens. He's appealing.
