Cowboys D on longest regular season TD-less streak since 1973-74
Todd Archer / Reporter
In the last three regular season games, the Cowboys' defense has not allowed a touchdown. The unit had back-to-back shutouts to close 2009 against Washington and Philadelphia and last Sunday the Redskins' only touchdown came on a fumble by the offense.
The last touchdown the Cowboys allowed was a Lance Moore catch with 8:00 to go in their 24-17 win at New Orleans on Dec. 19, 2009.
How far back in team history do you have to go to find a similar touchdown-less streak by the defense?
According to Elias Sports Bureau, all the way back to 1973-74.
The Cowboys closed the 1973 season with 27-7 and 30-3 wins against Washington and St. Louis on Dec. 9 and Dec. 16 and opened the 1974 season with a 24-0 win at Atlanta. They lost in Week 2 at Philadelphia, 13-10, but the defense did not allow a touchdown. The Eagles' TD came on a 96-yard fumble return by cornerback Joe Lavender. Another turnover - a Roger Staubach interception - set of Tom Dempsey's game winner from 46 yards with 25 seconds left.
The following week, the defense cracked, allowing two touchdowns in a 14-6 loss to the New York Giants.
