I'm going to be on Capitol Hill tomorrow, so this is all a bit unnerving for me right now. Not that I suspect anything major to happen, but because if something were planned for DC tomorrow, the Hill would be in the list of juicy targets.

WTF has happened to this planet?

I just assumed an Arab Muslim did. No other thought occurred to me except "bastards did it again". After reading this thread I now think that might have been wrong.

It's pretty sad that this thread disintegrated so quickly. Takes less than an hour to politicize all of this? Really? Like we're not going to hear about it for the next 3 months anyway.

Can we at least let all the information get out there before we start sarcastically asking for bomb-control legislation to try to take a dig at your political opponents?

What this guy said^^^^

Both of you said it better than I could have.

Terrible tragedy and I hope they find whoever is responsible. It is a shame it has to be politicized here (and elsewhere too I'm sure).

I have no idea how gun control has anything to do with this.

Meanwhile, this is part of the problem in this country. Instead of coming together to find a solution to a real problem we all just scramble to support our point of views. The pro gun people here used today's tragedy to try to make gun control look ineffective. Liberals will use it to rally their troops too.

I miss Americans that put America, and not their personal interests, first.

I agree. When these sick bastards want to kill and there is no stopping them. Forget the politics, this just proves that laws can't stop crazy people.

Heard this morning a story of an 8 year old boy who ran to hug his dad as his dad crossed the finish line. Then the 8 year old went back to where his mom and sister were on the sidelines. Bomb went off a few minutes later. Killed the little boy. Mom is seriously hurt. Sister lost her leg.

That one hurt to hear about. Could you imagine what that dad is going through right now?

No Middy, I can't imagine. I have kids myself and it's too unthinkable. People who purposely target civilians are absolute cowards. There were also stories of people in the Mid-East dancing in the streets yesterday, just like they did after 9/11.

What I don't understand is why we and Europe are so "tolerant" of Muslims and their culture, especially when they have no respect for ours. Yes, I'm jumping the gun even though there's no solid proof as to who did it. But the MO is there and the US has thwarted similar attacks against civilians in the past.

Because I hope we're better than that. Yes, there are extremists. There are extremists here too, but no matter race, religion, culture, etc. there are good people anywhere you go. I'd hate to persecute someone just because of the actions of some

Now, should we do whatever we can to isolate ourselves from certain regions of the world? That is worth arguing. Pull our interests out of those regions completely? Maybe.

All the families and friends of those affected by yesterday's tragedy are in my prayers. I lost friends and business associates in 9/11 so those that believe I am not sensitive enough to acts of terror by mad men can stuff it. I hope the self-righteous thought police are done with their lectures so we can start applying solutions to ensure we avoid this sort of thing again.

So what piece of paper can be signed by a civil servant that would have prevented this? Which amendment should we place an asterisk by this time? Would a ban or new tax be effective?

...or maybe people can climb down from their soap box and realize mad men will continue to do crazy things and that those that are willing to trade liberty for very temporary safety are really the crazy ones. We live (in a somewhat) free society and with that come risks that I am willing to accept.

It took about 20 minutes before major news networks were placing blame yesterday.

The call for bans and taxes started almost immediately after Sandy Hook. I posted in the manner I did for a reason. I want people to think a little before demanding actions without fully understanding the consequences of those actions. Of course blowing people up with bombs is illegal, just as mass shootings are illegal. Did a piece of paper prevent yesterday's tragedy? Obviously not. Will a ban on high capacity bombs prevent future bombs? No it will not.

Crazy people will continue to do crazy things and no amount of legislation will change that fact.

I know we're better than that Junk but at some point we need to deal with reality. I'm not talking about prosecuting or persecuting anyone for what they believe. But I am talking about curbing visa's and financial aid to these countries. I am talking about people needing to assimilate into our culture and way of life and not force theirs on us. Just try to build a church near a holy site in Saudi Arabia and you'll be prosecuted and publicly hung. But these same folks will fund a mosque near Ground Zero. These people use our own laws and tolerance against us.

I've been to Europe on numerous occasions. The Muslim population is growing and I think it's ironic that people chose to live in country (ie: England) and then protest as often as they do.

I agree about visas and financial aid. I even think we should start trying to find ways to completely withdraw our presence from those countries. We buy tons of oil from places like Saudi Arabia and they tend to foster tons of terrorists.

However, I disagree about the churches. I love this country because, for the most part, we can believe whatever we want without fear. Sometimes we forget this country was built by people looking for just that. It is what makes us better than the rest of the world. People would throw a shit fit if we tried restricting Christian churches in any way

Maybe I didn't explain myself very well. We need to better understand what we're dealing with and the reality is that we're dealing with religious zealots who have no tolerance for the same religious freedoms that we do. Do I want to curb a people's right to build a mosque, church or temple? No, but I think we need to have limits which is why I mentioned the mosque at Ground Zero as an example. It's a perversion of someone's religious freedom. These folks don't want to build the mosque to exercise their right to pray as they chose, but rather as a "fuck you" to America and a slap in the face to those who lost their lives. It's a symbol of conquer and conquest, not religious freedom.

I don't want to derail the thread which I've probably already done. It could turn out to be just another domestic whack job with an ax to grind like the Olympic bomber. But I have my doubts.
