If he doesn't beat out Cooper Rush, then its concerning but still not a bad trade. They gambled a future 4th rd pick on a guy drafted in the top-5. That said, I highly doubt that happens. I suspect Rush will get cut (slight possibility he is traded) before camp ever begins, and maybe before the draft.

Then you say lots of teams had him rated high but should be at least a #2 by now. He was trade dhere and had no offseason or training camp in the offense. He had no chance to beat out Rush and was never intended to. He wasnt traded anywhere else so we don't know what his status would have looked like there, but we do know several teams were interested (Vikings, Bills, Ravens". Pretty safe to say had he been acquired by the Vikings, he'd have gotten on the field after Cousins got injured.

Nobody was going to give up a 1st rd pick for Lance and why would they? The Niners were not going to give him the starting job back and didn't want to have his salary or draft status sitting behind Purdy. Everybody knew they'd move him.

Maybe Lance won't develop into anything, I have no idea. I suspect he won't get the chance here either because the dumbass GM has blinders on when it comes to Prescott. I'm willing to wait and see him on the field before rushing to judgement though.

Here is my take.

The Niners and Cowboys play the QB position the same way now that McCarthy has adopted a West Coast approach.

Kellen Moore's system requires the QB and receivers to be on the same page and to have chemistry (I prefer Moore's way), They change the route on the fly based on leverage. The QB and the receivers need to have chemistry. That's one reason Dak had so many interceptions. Dak is a smart QB, but I don't know that he processes on the fly fast. Maybe, maybe not. But Moore's system requires a fast processor of information on the fly.

The West Coast doesn't do that. It's more QB friendly. It allows the QB to be more robotic. It's a simpler system for the QB and leads to higher success rate for the QB, but it's not as explosive of a system as what Kellen Moore does. The explosion comes with RAC. Hence, why there is a premium on guys who have good RAC ability.

This is why year after year it seems the QBs with the best QB ratings are those in West Coast style offenses.

In other words, Lance should know WTF he is doing by now. Rush is not anything great. Lance should have been able to supplant Rush as number 2 at some point. I don't care if it was the last game of the year, but he should have been able to do that.

For perspective, I was worried that Dak would not be able to have the footwork needed to play in a West Coast-like offense. I saw Dak as a plodder with heavy feet. You look at the highlights of Montana and Steve Young and they are like friggin ballerinas with their footwork. You'll hear Steve Young say all the time that it's about the feet being in sync with the depth of the route.

In almost no time Dak got it right and there were games where I was like "WTF, he moved his feet amazingly well on that play." It didn't take Dak 3 years! Apparently, earlier in the season, McCarthy didn't install plays that required deeper drops, but Dak was functional.

My biggest problem with Dak has always been his contract. If he wants to win it all he needs to adopt Tom Brady's approach.

I mean look at this schedule. Based on what we know about these teams now this looks like a losing record schedule to me:

Home: Eagles, Giants, Foreskins, Lions, Saints Bucs, Ravens, Bengals & Texans

Away: Eagles, Giants, Foreskins, Niners, Falcons, Panthers, Stealers & Browns

Maybe you go 4-2 or 5-1 in the NFC East. Maybe you split with Saints/Bucs at home. Maybe they win 1 of 3 v Ravens/Bengals/Texans. Probably split at best with Niners/Falcons, Stealers & Browns

That means if you are fortunate, maybe 9 wins.

I gotta be honest, I see very little similarity between McCarthy and Shanahan's system.

And even if you want to sell me on "well they are both west coast passing systems" that still doesn't take into the massive terminology difference (something McCarthy alluded to the day we got him)

He got no training camp or preseason action, and has been the 3rd team scout QB all year. He was never going to replace Rush unless Rush got hurt. And the trade had nothing to do with this season.

Listening to these dudes on some podcast now. They are saying one of the reasons Jones refused to make a change is because he feared the new HC and staff might not be "pro Prescott" and some might even say they want to move on from him. They were citing how McCarthy went out of his way yesterday to say Prescott was "the answer" and had "full confidence in him" as just quoting Jerry-speak for further proof.

McCarthy lies!!! Prescott is NOT the answer to post season wins.
But McCarthy has to deal with sorry ass hand that the GM/Owner has dealt him.
Jerry is a Fraud!

Here are the differences as I see them. I see Shanahan uses a more sophisticated running game, which, IMO, should make it even easier on a QB. Shanahan ideally wants to use play action, boot legs and rollouts. Things that Lance should have excelled at.

Brock Purdy isn't great at rolling out, bootlegs, etc so we don't see it as much, but Shanahan would like to. Still, the assigned game flows from the running game.

The routes that Shanahan designs compliment the running game: play action, crossing routes, deep comebacks.

But, like in any "West Coast-ish" offense, the routes need to be precise and disciplined. This allows the QB to know where the receiver will be. It's not based on what the D is doing. IMO, this is why some say Brock Purdy is a system QB.

McCarthy is more vertical than Shanahan and the QB works more from the pocket. Even if we think of Aaron Rodgers, at least I think of a guy who operated mostly from the pocket. The receivers run go routes, deep posts, fades and also traditional short and intermediate West Coast stuff. McCarthy is more "pass happy" than Shanahan.

But the commonality is that the receivers run set routes. This should make it easier on the QB (QB friendly system). And for a guy with Trey Lance's skill set, he should have been good running bootlegs etc..getting him on the move. It should have been his strength.

So the way I see it, I think Lance is going to be friggin worse in Dallas, not better. Shanahan gave up 3 number ones because Lance should have fit his scheme.

My guess is McCarthy is trying to get Lance to work better out of the pocket, throw the ball when the back foot hits, etc, and he's hoping. But working from the pocket is something Rush does decently. He's also very smart.

Terminology? Come on, there are players that memorize a playbook in a week. They have wristbands.

Baker Mayfield showed up on a Friday or Saturday for the Rams and won the game on Sunday.

There are MANY good players found in round 4. It's not just anything. If that trade had nothing to do with this year, you're saying it was a 1 year trade because if Trey Lance has any confidence at all in his ability he will go to a team where he thinks it will, at the very least, be an open competition.

Thats why I believe what that other report was about why Jones didnt make the change. He doesnt want anyone telling him what he doesnt want to hear. He loves Prescott no matter what. He's all in.
