Cowboys reportedly won't be signing Brett Maher replacement for now

It appears Brett Maher‘s job is still safe, for now. This morning we heard word that Dallas was working out three kickers, including former Chargers and Redskins kicker Nick Rose. But despite hosting the specialists the Cowboys won’t be signing any of them at this time, a source told veteran Dallas beat writer Clarence Hill Jr. (Twitter link).


The Cowboys lost to the Bills in humiliating fashion on Thanksgiving, and Maher missed two crucial kicks in that game. He’s has converted only 67.9% of his attempts this season. Maher finished his college career at Nebraska all the way back in 2013 but didn’t make his regular-season NFL debut until last year.

He was pretty solid as a rookie after beating out veteran Dan Bailey in training camp, but the Cowboys might be regretting their decision right about now. While Maher seems to have at least one more week left on his leash, he might not have much longer. There’s a lot of tension in the building right now, and another crucial miss likely won’t be tolerated.

I don't see what difference it makes at this point. All that's out there to replace him is other Maher's anyway.

They do need to make a dependable kicker a priority for the offseason, something I am betting a new coach would demand anyway.

it shows that getting a great kicker is more about luck than it is anything else

i dont think dallas is making the wrong decision by keeping maher vs. spinning the wheel on a new guy. the team should be more worried about a laundry list of other special teams problems

but whatever decision they make, i hope its the wrong one to further help the end of this shitty regime

At the time they released him, it was basically a consensus, everybody thought he was done. He was really bad at the end of the prior year and wasn't much better in camp the year he was cut.

The Cowboys save that money this year and beyond, getting slapped with only $800,000 in dead money this season. After that, Bailey is off of the cap. Maher is slated to make only $480,000 this season according to Spotrac. The savings here are significant.
